I still don’t think this team can sustain even that .500 mark but they are definitely among a small handful of teams that are pleasantly surprising early. When you look at this collection of talent it really isn’t anything special but it seems like they might have just gotten tired of losing after some lean years.
On the mound for Seattle, as they open the series, is Blake Beaven. The M’s are 1-2 in his starts but his overall numbers aren’t bad. The best figure is just two walks in three starts this year. He has made just one start against Toronto in his brief career and it wasn’t pretty. The Jays rolled into Baltimore and struggled against the Orioles again, this time to the tune of a road series sweep. The problem was definitely on the offensive side as Toronto scored just 3 runs in the 3 games. They generally perform much better in the Rogers Centre, one of the better hitter’s parks in the majors right now. The Jays are still a game over .500 but have dropped to fourth place from first this week.
The reason the Jays are such strong favourites is that ace Ricky Romero is taking the hill. Toronto is 4-0 in his starts this season and he is showing true ace potential, keeping his team in games long enough for them to win them. This year and throughout his career he has been a much more effective pitcher at home. He is also a fast starter with a career 2.63 ERA in the month of April.
