2010 Major League Baseball NLCS- Game 1 Preview

San Francisco Giants at Philadelphia Phillies
Friday, Oct. 15   7:30 P.M. (ET).
San Francisco             +155
Philadelphia         -170
Total Is Set At 6

The 2010 NL West Champion San Francisco Giants travel to Citizens Bank Park for the first two games of this NLCS best-of-seven series against the NL East Champion Philadelphia Phillies. Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 15 with the first pitch at 7:30 p.m. (ET). It will be broadcast live on Fox.

All four games of San Francisco’s NLDS best-of-five series with Atlanta were decided by one run as each ballgame came down to the very last out. The Giants demonstrated great resilience and a showcased a solid pitching staff that is extremely talented from the starting rotation right through the bullpen. It is no wonder they led the NL with a 3.36 team ERA.

The main concern for the Giants has to be their lack of offensive production. They were ranked seventh in the NL in hitting with a team batting average of .257 and ninth in runs scored with 697. They only managed to hit .212 and score 11 total runs in their four games against Atlanta. Pitching can carry this team, but you would have to think that somewhere along the line in this series their bats are going to have to win a game or two.

San Francisco’s top hurler Tim Lincecum will get the start in Game 1. He is coming off a rock- solid performance in Game 1 of the NLDS where he went the distance giving up two hits, no runs, and struck out 14 batters in the Giants 1-0 win over Atlanta. He ended the regular season 16-10 with an ERA of 3.43 in 33 starts. Lifetime against Philadelphia he is 2-1 with a 3.17 ERA.

Philadelphia made short work of Cincinnati in the NLDS behind some great pitching and the ability to capitalize on a number of Reds mistakes. The Phillies closed the best-of-five series out in three games with the key victory coming in Game 2 when they found themselves in a 4-0 hole. The Reds are not known for making too many mistakes, but they imploded under the pressure by committing a record four errors that enabled the Phils to come away with the 7-4 win.

The main intangible that the Phillies bring to this series is experience. They have gotten to this point the past two years and have a knack for exploiting every single mistake an opposing team makes. This team has three solid starters in their rotation and a dangerous hitting lineup, but more importantly it knows how to win games no matter what the situation.

Philadelphia ace Roy Halladay will be making his second career start in the postseason, following up his no-hitter in Game 1 of the NLDS. It would have been a perfect game had he not given up a walk in the fifth inning. He finished the regular season with 21-10 record and an ERA of 2.44 in 33 starts. He has struggled in limited action against the Giants going 0-2 with a 7.23 ERA.

Head-to-head, these teams have split the last 10 games they have played. This season, each won two out of three at their own ballpark. This game comes down to which one of these aces makes the first mistake which may not be until late in the game. Stick with the Phillies and their experience on the big stage to find a way to manufacture a win out of what should be an ‘instant classic’ pitching duel.
