Kansas City

The Royals have dropped the first two games of their road set with the Tigers dropping them to a tie with Detroit, though they have a couple of games in hand. They are definitely looking to get out of Motown with at least one game to their credit and have a great chance tonight.

This is a critical juncture for a team that is looking to make their first trip to the playoffs in a long while.

They have to get their mojo back, if only to set up things better for when the Tigers come to KC next week.

James Shields may not have the lowest ERA on the staff but he has been great in the ace role for Kansas City this season.

[dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

He has been amazingly consistent as just once since July 1 has he given up more than 3ER in a ball game giving a pretty light hitting team a good chance to win every time he takes the mound.

He has not beaten Detroit this season though (team record 0-3).

Detroit

Per the above Detroit has closed the gap with Kansas City with just a few weeks to go.

Given that they have played more games than the Royals this one is especially valuable as they look to close out the series. Miguel Cabrera gets all the attention but you can argue that Victor Martinez is the MVP this season. He is hitting .335 and leading the club with 30 homers.

Even more amazing is that he has struck out just 39 times. Everyone else in the league who has 30 homers or more has at least 72 strikeouts.

Where would the Tigers be without Rick Porcello this season and his career high 15 wins and counting.

He is far from the most dominant hurler on the staff but he pretty much never misses a turn and this year he has become less hittable which is why he is having even more success.

He is 2-0 against the Royals this season giving the Tigers a great chance to finish the series with a win.

I am looking for the vet to outduel the kid so to speak in this one.

The underdog value on Kansas City is a nice bonus for this play. Shields is the kind of pitcher that can rise to the moment and he will probably have one of his best starts of the season in this one.

Ignore the fact that he hasn’t beaten Detroit yet this year.
