The visiting Brew Crew (15-27) are trying desperately to get their house in order, and a resurgence from star CF Carlos Gomez may be just what the doctor ordered.

It’s been a dumpster fire for Milwaukee so far in 2015, thanks to lousy pitching, injuries to key pieces C Jonathan Lucroy and IF Jean Segura and a slow start from Gomez, a legitimate five-tool talent.

Atlanta (20-20), meanwhile, has rather surprised the other way. Playing .500 ball, the Braves haven’t set the world on fire, but observers predicted Atlanta would be barely above the Phillies in the NL East basement thanks to – what they said – would be a league-worst offense.

That hasn’t been the case.

The Braves have scored runs thanks to better-than-anticipated production from OF Nick Markakis, spare part 2B Kelly Johnson, the ageless A.J. Pierzynski and the predicted excellence of Freddie Freeman.

The Braves have done this despite missing 3B Chris Johnson for the past month with a hand injury, who was supposed to be one of their better bats in the lineup.

Atlanta is coming off a 10-1 victory over Milwaukee yesterday and, with the Marlins slumping and the Nationals not quite finding their feet, the Braves have acquitted themselves decently, currently in third in the division.

Throw in the talented Alex Wood taking the hill for Atlanta tonight, and it shouldn’t be easy sledding for the visitors.

For Milwaukee to have any success, starting pitcher Peralta must find a way to get people out. Fellow rotation mate Mike Fiers looks like he might be finally figuring it out, but if Milwaukee’s pitching doesn’t improve, this season is a write-off.

Offseason pick-up Adam Lind is hitting well, thanks to great platoon numbers, and Gomez’s improved play of late is encouraging.

To expose the real truth behind the Brewers’s decline, one could argue that big-money OF Ryan Braun – despite leading the team in HRs and RBIs to date – has never quite been the same since his PED suspension and subsequent thumb injury.

But that’s a bedtime story for another night.

If the Brewers can stop yielding runs at an alarming pace, they have the offense to win ballgames and claw themselves out of the NL Central division cellar.

Ultimately, Milwaukee’s high-ceiling yet low-producing bats must lay the lumber on Wood on Friday night in the Peachtree State.

Despite some encouraging trends for baseball fans in Wisconsin, it looks plausible that the home team will continue the Brew Crew’s misery tonight.
