Sunday Night Baseball Pick: Giants vs Dodgers

“September surge” is a term we hear every year in Major League Baseball. Some plucky team always manages to claw its way back into the playoff race over the final month of the season just when fans, pundits and bettors think it’s impossible.

The Giants and Dodgers – who do battle Sunday night on ESPN – both hope to be that magical September team and steal the National League West from the San Diego Padres. Here’s hoping yours truly goes on a September surge and ends the recent MLB betting slump, too.

Sunday, September 5, 8:05 p.m. ET

San Francisco Giants (74-60, 2nd place in NL West)

Los Angeles Dodgers (68-66, 4th place in NL West)

The pitching matchup features two hurlers who couldn’t be any more different in their approaches.

Jonathan Sanchez (9-8, 3.54)

Hiroki Kuroda (10-11, 3.39)

Jonathan Sanchez vs Hiroki Kuroda is power versus efficiency. Sanchez makes his living by striking out everything in sight (more than a batter per inning), walking plenty of hitters and rarely going deep into games.

Still, though he can be erratic, Sanchez is often unhittable. Opponents bat just .215 off him this season, suggesting that when he does struggle, it’s because he beats himself with poor command. A sample of his last 10 games shows just how unpredictable Sanchez is. He’s allowed two runs or fewer six times but four runs or more three times over that span.

Sanchez has major trouble with the Dodgers historically, going 0-5 with a 6.04 ERA. Matt Kemp is the major Sanchez killer, batting .450 off him with a homer and seven RBI over 20 career at-bats.

On the flip side of the coin is Hiroki Kuroda. He doesn’t strike out batters at Sanchez’s prolific rate but he rarely walks guys and he almost always pitches deep into games. He’s gone at least seven innings in five straight starts.

Kuroda has six career starts against the San Francisco Giants, going 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA and just one homer allowed in 35 innings.

Though San Francisco has been the better team overall this season, I like the Dodgers on Sunday night. Kuroda is hot, allowing two runs or fewer in four of his last five starts, and Sanchez’s track record against L.A. is downright awful.
