Sunday Night Baseball Pick: Chicago White Sox vs Chicago Cubs

A World Series preview? Before the 2010 MLB season started, the Dodgers and Red Sox seemed like realistic possibilities to meet in the Fall Classic. But both started very slowly and found themselves wondering if they’d make the playoffs at all.

In June, however, both have surged back up the standings. Suddenly, a Dodgers/Red Sox Sunday nighter is a beauty matchup after all.

Sunday, June 20, 8:05 p.m. ET

Los Angeles Dodgers (38-28, 1st place in NL West)
Boston Red Sox (40-28, 3rd place in AL East)

Probable starters Hiroki Kuroda and Clay Buchholz go about their business quite differently but have both been effective for their clubs this season.

Gavin Floyd (2-6, 6.18)
Ted Lilly (1-5, 3.28)

The Dodgers’ Hiroki Kuroda hasn’t always been healthy since coming over from Japan but he’s been the picture of tidiness when pitches. He keeps the ball down – he’s surrendered just seven homers in 81.1 innings this year – and he doesn’t walk many hitters.

His schedule in June has been difficult – Atlanta, St. Louis, Cincinnati – but he’s produced a 1.50 ERA over that stretch.

He’ll have to be at his best against Boston, as he’s just 1-5 against the American League in his career.

Clay Buchholz has made major strides toward realizing his vast potential. He’s the anti-Kuroda, often struggling with his efficiency but showing nasty stuff and simply not allowing very many hits. Opponents hit just .237 off Buchholz this season and have hit just three long balls off him in 84.1 innings.

Buchholz hasn’t faced the Dodgers in his career before but he’ll at least feel comfortable at home. He’s 10-7 with a 3.79 ERA at Fenway Park, the site of his no-hitter as a rookie. It will be interesting to see how he fares against another man with a rich history at Fenway: Manny Ramirez.

ManRam makes his first trip to Boston since he was traded in 2008. Playing against Boston in his career, Manny is just a .269 hitter with 11 homers in 72 games. He does enter the weekend’s action batting .311 with a .990 OPS in June.

Both pitchers have to navigate a very tough lineup – but the edge probably goes to Boston here. Kuroda hasn’t fared well facing the DH and pitching in American League Parks. Buchholz is also pitching well at the moment and the Red Sox in general are catching fire, posting an 11-5 record this month.

He can’t seem to keep the ball down against Paul Konerko (.286, three homers in 21 at-bats) or Mark Kotsay (.444 career hitter against Lilly).

I see the Sunday nighter as a good opportunity to make money on the White Sox as a dog.

On the surface, the Cubs seem like the logical choice, but a closer look at the numbers suggest Floyd will keep improving and that Lilly’s bad track record against the Pale Hose will catch up to him.

Gambling Trends:

LA Dodgers are 11-5 SU in their last 16 games on the road
LA Dodgers are 2-5 SU in their last 7 games
Boston is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games
Boston is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games at home
