This recent run keeps them in first place in the AL Central ahead of the super surprising Pittsburgh Pirates. These teams played a rare 2 game series last month splitting it on a previous trip to Citi Field.
The Reds are getting some very solid pitching but Bronson Arroyo is still struggling with consistency. He gives up a lot of hits but keeps his walks to a minimum with just 10 total on the season. Here is a statistical oddity: Arroyo has actually given up more home runs than walks this season. Against a team with little pop like New York that should keep the surging Reds in the game. The Mets are also coming off a sweep, an impressive one against the Rays on the road. They are currently in second place but I am still wondering when the wheels are going to fall off. Despite their recent run they have only won 4 of their last 10 as their pitching is probably the worst amongst teams in the hunt. Primarily at fault is a bullpen that is devoid of arms that put a fear into the opposition.
On the mound Dillon Gee doesn’t seem to have progressed a ton in his sophomore season, although he is pitching better lately. He has struggled at home this season even though that’s where the Mets excel. New York needs to get their bats going if they are going to stay in the race, only David Wright and Lucas Duda could be considered to be having good seasons at the plate.
