The Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals will play the third of a crucial NL Central three-game series this Thursday night at Busch Stadium. Game time is set for 8:15 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on the MLB Network.

Milwaukee extended its lead over the Cardinals in the division to four games with a 5-3 victory in extra innings as a 105 road underdog in Game 1 on Tuesday. The win was the Brewers ninth in its last 10 games and fifth straight to push their overall record to 66-50 on the year heading into Wednesday’s Game 2. They are 41-15 at home, but just 25-35 on the road.

This current tear can be attributed mainly to a Milwaukee lineup that has averaged 6.5 runs in its last 10 games. The Brewers are currently ranked sixth in the NL in scoring with an average of 4.46 runs per game.

Yovani Gallardo is slated to get the start for Milwaukee on Thursday. He is 13-7 this season with a 3.56 ERA in 24 previous starts. He has been sharp as of late, giving up just four earned runs in his last 28 innings pitched. Gallardo is 1-4 against the Cardinals lifetime with an ERA of 4.66. St. Louis is almost facing a must-win situation to try and keep things close in the division race. The four-game deficit is the largest of the season, and it is 5.5 games back of Atlanta in the Wildcard race. The Cardinals are 62-54 overall; 33-29 on the road and 29-25 at home.

To add insult to injury, it looks like St. Louis will have to send reliever Lance Lynn to the DL after he strained his oblique in Tuesday’s loss. This is just another blow to a pitching staff that is now ranked ninth in the NL with a 3.86 team ERA.

Chris Carpenter is expected to be on the mound on Thursday for the Cardinals. He is 7-8 this season with a 3.75 ERA, but has been solid over the past two months with a 6-2 record in his last 10 starts and an ERA of just 2.85 ERA.

One of those loses was to Milwaukee on Aug. 1, dropping Carpenter to 4-5 with a 5.50 ERA against them I his career.

Head-to-head this season, the Brewers have now won seven of 10 heading into Wednesday game, but they are just 2-2 at Busch Stadium. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of the last six games.

Both starters come into this game in great form, but stick with the Cardinals to grind out a much needed win keep their division rivals within striking distance.
