Kentucky Derby Rankings – Triple Crown Preview

Who are the best-looking online betting plays entering the 2009 Kentucky Derby, and the eventual Triple Crown Race Season? Let’s break down the top 10 according to race experts at Cappers Picks Horse Racing staff…

Kentucky Derby Power Rankings

The most storied event in horse race betting is upon us as the Kentucky Derby odds are just over a week away.

Who are the best-looking online betting plays entering the race? Let’s break down the top 10.

  • I WANT REVENGE – Right now, he looks like he may very well get that revenge at the racebook. He has pretty much everything going for him entering Kentucky Derby betting – great speed, toughness, a 332 Tomlinson Distance Rating, a great Beyer Speed Figure (113) and has looked very strong so far this season.Aside from the fact that he’s new to Churchill Downs, this guy looks like a winner.
  • FRIESAN FIRE – There’s nothing wrong with his ability and online betting players have to consider him for that reason; he was fantastic at the Louisiana Derby. Big problem: a seven-week layoff. The last time a horse won the Kentucky Derby odds after that long of a break: 1956.
  • DUNKIRK – He slots in just ahead of Quality Road despite losing to him in the past, as Dunkirk is better suited to this distance. Not the class of the field but no massive red flags, either.
  • QUALITY ROAD – Certainly has racebook momentum after his Florida Derby win but you have to wonder if his 226 Tomlinson Distance rating will overstretch him in Kentucky Derby betting.
  • PIONEEROF THE NILE – The pros: Hall-of-Fame trainer, good recent performance at Churchill Downs. The main con: he hasn’t experienced dirt, so he’s a bit of a wildcard.
  • CHOCOLATE CANDY – He may not be a household name, but few horses have more momentum entering the Derby odds; he’s won four of his last six races. Not a bad guy to take a racebook flier on.
  • DESERT PARTY – Will the real Desert Party please stand up? That wasn’t him struggling at the UAE Derby, was it?
  • REGAL RANSOM – Does he deserve to be ranked higher than his No. 7 stablemate after dusting him at the UAE Derby? According to most horse race betting experts, no, despite his recent strong showing.
  • PAPA CLEM – Not a racebook favorite but making all the right moves leading up to the Kentucky Derby odds, having won the Arkansas Derby and hanging around with some major contenders to finish second in his last two starts.
  • GENERAL QUARTERS – This guy seems to be a hot sleeper pick these days and his story is out of a Disney movie, as his trainer is an former Louisville high-school teacher and principle. He won the Blue Grass to stamp his ticket to the Kentucky Derby odds, so you just never know…

I Want Revenge is currently a 3-1 favorite with Pioneer of the Nile and Dunkirk right behind him at 4-1. If one of these three horses can win the Derby, then the hunt for the Triple Crown is on.

I have a feeling that a long shot like Chocolate Candy or Hold Me Back wins the Derby and turns the Triple Crown odds upside down
