The Raiders have surged to relevancy over the past month, but they get their first true test when they visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. If Oakland is the real deal, it needs to deliver a solid showing against Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh (6-3, 5-4 ATS) is suffering from injuries on the offensive line, and it showed in last week’s 39-26 loss to New England. The Patriots sacked Ben Roethlisberger five times and pressured the quarterback all afternoon. The loss dropped the Steelers to just 1-3 against the spread in their last four games. Guard Chris Kemoeatu will be back in the lineup, though the Steelers must move on without their two starting tackles, who are finished for the year. Either way, Roethlisberger will have to scramble for extra time for the rest of the year.

Defensively, the Steelers were exposed, particularly through the air. The “D” was shredded for 350 yards and three scores through the air. Pittsburgh failed to record a sack or takeaway, and it was the fourth straight game in which the Steelers have allowed 20 points or more. There have been injuries on this side of the ball too, so cracks are beginning to appear.

The Raiders (5-4, 5-4 ATS) have bulled their way to four wins in the past five games, including three straight. Two weeks ago it was a 23-20 win over Kansas City, giving Oakland three consecutive wins against the spread. Now they’re well rested after enjoying a bye.

Suddenly, the Raiders offense is racking up points like there’s no tomorrow—38 per outing over the last three games. Darren McFadden has emerged as a yardage machine; he added another 104 yards against the Chiefs last week. Jason Campbell has been much improved during the winning streak, throwing five touchdowns and just one interception.

The defense is also pulling its weight, allowing just 12 points per game over the last three contests. Pittsburgh will be a much bigger test, though, as those games came against Denver, Seattle and Kansas City—not exactly the most explosive offenses in the NFL.

After years of awful football, the Raiders are finally relevant again. This is a tremendous test, though—Pittsburgh is on a different level than the teams Oakland has beat up on over the past few weeks. The Steelers should be able to shut down McFadden, so can Jason Campbell throw the ball well enough to make it again? I’m not buying it yet. Take Pittsburgh.
