Two of the most storied teams in NFL history, the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have won six Super Bowl Championships, and the Green Bay Packers, who own 12 Championships including a trio of Super bowl titles, are set to collide in Arlington in Super Bowl XLV this Sunday. I will be reviewing some of the Super Bowl prop picks later this week, but for now we’ll focus on Super Bowl XLV odds, including the points spread, and the over/under to see if we can predict a winner.

This year’s Super Bowl 45 odds are the closest than it has been in 27 years. Online betting giant BetUs.com currently has the Steelers-Packers point spread at Green Bay -2 ½  points, down from the -3 it was a few days ago. Meanwhile, the odds-makers opened the Steelers-Packers total at 46 points, but they have since adjusted it to 44 with the Packers total at 23 and the Steelers at 21.

While both team’s offenses received a lot of attention during the year, the Packers and the Steelers possessed two of the best defenses’ in the entire NFL this season.  Pittsburgh’s defense was the stingiest of the two, surrendering just 14.5 points per game, while Green Bay’s D was nearly as good,  yielding just 15 points per game; good enough for second best in the NFL.

Add up the two teams’ points allowed and you come up with an average of just 29.5 points per game this season—14.5 points fewer than the current Super Bowl 45 odds total. If that’s not enough proof, both sides combined to cover the under in nearly 57 percent of their regular season games this past year.

Offensively both teams ranked amongst the best in the league in scoring for the regular season, with the Packers ranking 10th (24.3), and the Steelers putting up 23.4 points per game to rank12th.

Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers garnered a lot of attention this season, but a lot of credit has to be given to an entire Green Bay team that fought through a rash of devastating injuries of one sort or another all season long. Rodgers has been unstoppable in the playoffs, and while he had a monster season, he has been even better in the post season. Rodgers has led the Packers’ offense, scoring an average of nearly 31 points per game at home, but just 21.3 away from Lambeau.

The big question here is will the week off help a team who had to play three straight road teams to get to the Super Bowl, or will it hurt their momentum?

The Steelers’ meanwhile, who spent most of the regular season atop of the standings in the AFC, overcame the absence of franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who served a six-game suspension to start the year. However, since his return, “Big Ben” has produced the “big play” often this season, leading his team back to the Super Bowl for the third time since 2005.

There is already a buzz building surrounding this game, and as far as Super Bowl betting odds are concerned, you’ll want to get in early. Super Bowl Sunday draws more first-time bettors than any other sporting event, and because of this, the over/under is likely to change, continuing its downward trend. Why is this important? The under has covered in five of the last six Super Bowls, so getting your wager in now will lock you in at the current O/U of 44, as I expect this year’s over/under Super Bowl 45 odds to close at 42 or 42 ½ .

Furthermore, if you’re looking to cover the points spread with your wager, the best Super Bowl XLV odds can be locked in now.

Matt’s Free Prediction –Of course, we’ll see some big offensive plays from both Roethlisberger and Rodgers, but points will be hard to come by in this one. The outcome of Super Bowl XLV will surely be decided by the better defense, and in this case, the Steelers have the advantage.
