How to Handicap College Football Bowl Games

Evan Altemus
Evan Altemus

The average bettor looks at college football bowl games with the thoughts and images carried forward from the regular season. However this approach will not lead to a profitable bowl season most of the time. Just like handicapping other sports, there are keys to analyzing these games than just the records from the regular season and player match-ups, but the average bettor fails to realize this strategy.

MTSU vs. Southern Miss Preview | Odds

New Orleans Bowl – Sunday, December 20, 2009 8:30 PM ET

Matt Fargo
Matt Fargo

The Betting Numbers

Southern Mississippi opened as a three-point favorite and the line has gradually risen to -3.5 with also a few -4’s in the mix. I expect this line to go up even more by gametime so if you are going to be taking the Golden Eagles, it is best to do it sooner rather than later. The total opened at 60 and has come down as far at 57.5 with the majority of shops sitting on 58 early in the week.

Loyalty can be one of a gambler’s worst enemies. That’s why bettors should never – or at least rarely – wager on their favorite teams. They lose objectivity and are sometime blinded by their feelings about their teams.

Looking at NFL streaks, two things stand out in 2009: The Saints and Colts. It was quite a story two years ago when the Patriots were trying to march through the NFL regular season at 16-0 as it hadn’t happened in 35 years. Now, just two years later, a pair of teams are threatening to do it!

The Overlooked Edge: Football Depth

Jim Feist
Jim Feist

Depth is such an essential element of success in pro and college football, and one that is easily overlooked. Big college programs have this as a huge advantage over small schools. Because of injuries, Oregon had to use backup QB Nate Cost in the middle of the season, and he played well in a win over UCLA.

NFC Play-off Picture December 1, 2009

As the Saints continue to dominate – nailed MNF 10* Titan on the Saints and the 7* Titan UNDER for a nice big time parlay winner – and the Colts continue to remain unbeaten, the media focus is justly focused on these two teams. This week however, is a significant week for the NFC contenders and how these games will shape the play-off picture.

Yes, I’m a bit of an animal lover. I’m partial to dogs more than cats. Not because dogs can fetch the newspaper, but because they can fetch the money. Many times dogs can be worth a serious look, especially in college football where emotion, tradition and fan support are such key components.

Doc Sports Week In Review (Thanksgiving Week 2009)

This Week in Betting, A to Z

Doc Sports

A – Ageless. Brett Favre just keeps getting it done. I fully expected him to be disappointing this year – last season with the Jets all over again. Instead, you don’t even have to exaggerate to say that he is probably playing the best football of his career.
