2010 NFL Betting – Seven Key Steps to Success

Ready To Bet On NFL Football In 2010?

Looking for some great tips to consider before 2010 NFL betting? We’ve got your back. Don’t you hate when you get that perfect betting tip or system at the end of the football season? You’re left thinking, “Why didn’t I know this before I lost money all year?” Time to change that.

CHECK OUT OUR CAPPERS 2010 NFL WEEKLY PICKS ALL SEASON LONG —–>

Just as the season is about to start, here are seven simple steps to follow for success. Some of them may be obvious, others not so much. But they can all help you. Enjoy!

1. Team statistics mean everything

You can usually tell a lot about a matchup simply by looking at each team’s statistical strengths and weaknesses. For example, while no one expected a 59-0 rout, most savvy bettors saw New England’s destruction of Tennessee coming last year. The reason: the Titans ranked brutally low against the pass and struggled to rush the passer whereas the Patriots ranked near the top of the league in passing offense. It was easy to see that Tom Brady would pick the Titans apart.

Team ranks sometimes matter more than an individual star’s presence. Nnamdi Asomugha is an elite cornerback and he helps make the Oakland Raiders’ pass defense respectable but he alone won’t ensure that Oakland will “shut down” an opponent and win. If Oakland can’t stop the run, it will still allow plenty of points.

2. Keep track of injuries

While you can sometimes get better value hammering lines early in the week, I recommend taking slightly less value but upping your odds closer to game time with an educated guess. Follow injury reports and be aware of any high-impact absences or returns to the lineup.

3. Watch the games

It’s a simple but effective way to know more about whom you’re betting on. Aaron Rodgers is a great quarterback but you’ll know from watching him that he holds onto the ball for way too long. When he faces an aggressive pass rush, you may expect him to take a few extra hits and turn over the ball.

Watching games can reveal things not found on a stat sheet. On paper, Brett Favre took zero sacks against New Orleans in the NFC Championship game last year. If you watched it live, you’ll know that the Saints beat the tar out of him by hitting him at the end of every play, even if he still got his throws off. Suddenly, the secret to defeating Favre was revealed: beat him up. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

4. Weather matters, especially late in the season

Rain and mud can affect teams’ run-to-pass ratios but it’s cold weather and snow that really give bettors a leg up. If a Florida team travels to Buffalo or Green Bay in December, pounce. Warm-weather teams often struggle to adjust in tough conditions.

A perfect example is a famous 1985 matchup between the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Green Bay Packers. In a vicious snow storm, the Pack gained 463 yards. The Bucs gained 69. Not a coincidence.

5. Losers aren’t always losers

Just because a team’s win-loss record is terrible doesn’t mean it will lose you money every week. Some bad teams consistently lose close games and thus beat the spread more often than people expect. The most famous example in 2009 was Kansas City; the Chiefs went 2-14 but lost eight games by a touchdown or less.

6. Keep track of betting-specific statistics

This rule goes hand-in-hand with No. 5. If you bet against the spread every week, doesn’t a team’s against the spread record matter more than its win-loss record? The Cleveland Browns were 10-6 ATS last year. If you ignored their  5-11 straight-up record and followed the betting trends, they would’ve won you money.

Betting statistics go beyond the spread; don’t forget about over/under records.

7. Look for value early in the season

It’s easier to handicap a game in Week 15, when you have a boatload of season rankings and accurate current team statistics to help with your forecast. But what about Week 1, when we don’t truly know how much a team has improved over the offseason?

Take the Denver Broncos. Everyone expected them to be a disaster in 2009 yet they opened the season 6-0. Opponents underestimated them and so did bettors. It’s no sure thing, but it can be profitable to play a hunch on your favorite surprise team early in the season.

For example, most books favor the Chicago Bears by seven over the Detroit Lions in Week 1 this year. But what if Chicago underestimates rookie Jahvid Best’s breakaway speed or Ndamukong Suh’s ability to rush Jay Cutler? Sometimes, early-season unpredictability gives you value.

NFL Betting Lines: The Holdouts “ Who Should Get Paid?

Supporters of the New York Jets have two prices on their mind: 10-1, and $15.1 million. The former price is where you’ll find the Jets on the Super Bowl futures market. The latter is the minimum that cornerback Darrelle Revis wants to be paid annually, and he appears willing to hold out until he gets it.

2010 Super Bowl Future Odds Update

Super Bowl XLV Odds Update

NFL Football betting fans sure are getting their money’s worth from the free nfl picks from Capperspicks.com.

Hard to believe it’s almost August and the NFL preseason will be starting up soon. I think that means it’s time for an updated look at the contenders, agreed?

Here are the top 15 based on odds.

NFL Betting – SuperBowl Future Lines Update

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +925

On one hand, Peyton Manning is bound to start showing signs of age some time soon. On the other, he arguably has his deepest group of receiving targets he’s ever had. So maybe the sky is still the limit.

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +925

Even with Vincent Jackson suspended and set to hold out for up to 10 games, the Chargers still lead the way along with Indy. That’s the beauty of life in the AFC West. And Ryan Mathews should be an upgrade over LaDainian Tomlinson at this stage of his career.

DALLAS COWBOYS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +1015

As long as Dallas can play strong “D” and rush the passer for a full season and not half a season like it did in 2009, this year could be special. Tony Romo has a fantastic group of weapons around him that should only get better with Felix Jones possibly starting and Dez Bryant joining the receiving corps. The Cowboys could be the NFL’s top offensive team this year.

BALTIMORE RAVENS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +1015

The Ravens may be my pick to win it all – because of their offense, believe it or not. Joe Flacco keeps maturing, Ray Rice could be the league MVP this year and Anquan Boldin just makes B-More all that more dangerous. But is the defense too long in the tooth? That’s the big question.

GREEN BAY PACKERS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +1015

I think it’s between the Packers and Cowboys to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Aaron Rodgers is the game’s next great superstar and years of good drafting has turned the Pack’s defense into an elite unit. The key this year is for the O-line to do a better job protecting Rodgers. Brian Bulaga will help – but will he help right away?

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +1215

This is a fool’s bet if you ask me. Tom Brady is aging and you never know when Randy Moss will mentally check out of New England.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +1215

Strange to see New Orleans’ betting support dwindling when it really hasn’t lost much from its championship team. Is it the Madden Curse? More likely, it’s that the defense sagged in the second half of 2009.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +1215

I still think this is the most talent-rich team in football. No team has as many playmakers on both sides of the ball as Minnesota does. Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, Sidney Rice, Jared Allen, the Williams Wall…the list goes on. But the Brett Favre fiasco will bite the Vikings in the behind this season – even if he plays.

NEW YORK JETS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +1615

Am I missing something? If I was the oddsmaker, I’d rank the Jets no lower than fourth. They’re loaded with high-priced talent. And for Mark Sanchez distracters: love him or hate him, the Jets still made the AFC Championship game in his rookie season. Now he has a year of experience and more weapons around him. What’s not to like?

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +2250

Is this another fool’s bet? Sure, the Steelers still probably have a top-three NFL defense and Rashard Mendenhall definitely looks ready to be a workhorse back all season. But won’t Ben Roethlisberger’s absence leave them in a hole before he returns? We’ll see.

ATLANTA FALCONS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +2550

Of the mid-range contenders, I may like Atlanta’s upside the best. Matt Ryan is a winner and a real student of the game. He should improve dramatically in his third season.

NEW YORK GIANTS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +2250

The Giants could definitely bounce back this year. Eli Manning is getting better at protecting the ball and his current receiving corps is easily his best ever. Hakeem Nicks could break out in 2010.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +2250

Do you really want to throw down on Washington when a defending division champ like Cincinnati gives you more value? Mike Shanahan is out for redemption but the ’Skins seem cursed to me. And they’re just so…damned….old.

TENNESSEE TITANS

Super Bowl XLV odds: +2550

The Titans are an intriguing sleeper to me. They run the ball like crazy and Vince Young suddenly looked like a winner in 2010. But how will he fare now that the pressure is on?

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

Super Bowl XLV odds: +3050

This bet depends on how much you believe in Kevin Kolb. He topped 300 yards in both his starts last year but he also turned over the ball a lot. The Eagles should at the very least be fun to watch thanks to Andy Reid, who is statistically the most pass-happy playcaller ever to coach in the NFL.
