Shea’s MLB Power Rankings (as of 8/25/2011)
With the waiver deadline arriving, it’s safe to say we’ve officially entered baseball’s stretch run. Which teams are making a final push up the power rankings?

Oh, how the Pittsburgh Pirates long for the good old days of…six weeks ago. Around the All-Star break, they were in the thick of the National League Central race, jockeying for the division lead with Milwaukee and St. Louis.
After the pack was tight for the first two thirds of the season, the American League Central is finally crystallizing.
So far, so good for the Boston Red Sox on their road trip. They opened by taking three of four from the Kansas City Royals.
Make it five wins and five losses for the St. Louis Cardinals over their last 10 games (through Thursday). Not good enough.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are taking a pretty big gamble on Saturday when they trot a rookie out to the mound in the middle of a playoff race.

That’s more like it, Milwaukee! The Brewers are finally doing what most of us expected them to do all year: lap the field in the National League Central.
With the Detroit Tigers separating themselves from the pack slightly in the American League Central, the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox have a big series this week.
The clock is ticking for The Tampa Bay Rays as they try to catch the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox in the American League East.
For the second straight years, pundits and bettors alike were mostly high on the Rockies entering the season, expecting them to challenge for the National League West crown.
I have to admit – I didn’t expect the Angels to still be contending for the American League West crown this late in the 2011 season.
Did the Tampa Bay Rays just spontaneously decide that they want back in the American League East race?
We don’t see many massive shifts in the power rankings this week. It’s interesting to notice, though, that virtually every division has become a two-team race.
The Oakland Athletics have shown a bit of fight lately, winning three straight games through August 9, but let’s not pretend that they’re still in the American League West hunt.
I want to cry for the Pittsburgh Pirates. They were easily baseball’s most inspiring story just a few weeks ago, leading the National League Central after the All-Star break for the first time in 19 years.
