2010 NFL Draft Predictions – Interior Lineman Rankings

The NFL draft moves to primetime for the first time in 2010. The first round will be in PRIMETIME, and takes place on Thursday April 22nd at 7:30 p.m. ET. The NFL Draft second and third rounds are on Friday April 23 at 6 p.m. ET. Rounds Four thru Seven will be held on Saturday April 24th at 10 a.m. ET.

With all that said the 2010 NFL Draft is rapidly coming up on us and our College football handicapping expert James Hayes has begun analyzing player data from the Combine and PRO workout days. He’s begun writing his online NFL draft position by position scouting reports.

Onto the 2010 Interior Lineman – Guard/Center Rankings –

MIKE IUPATI – Idaho

Iupati is a mountain of a man, and likely the first interior offensive lineman off the board. He is 6”5, 330 lbs and plays with a vehement streak of nastiness. He will consistently win battles in close proximity, finishes his blocks and doesn’t take plays off. His athleticism isn’t out of this world, but he can still pull effectively and his trump card is run blocking. Iupati has been projected by many as a second-rounder, but he might be selected at the end of the first round by the Dallas Cowboys; Iupati and his road-grading tendencies are a Cowboys calling card. Dallas also has some good offensive lineman that aren’t getting any younger.

MAURKICE POUNCEY – Florida

Maurkice and his twin brother Mike have been a formidable road-grading duo for the Gators’ offensive line the past few seasons. This season’s center class was fairly uninspiring until Pouncey, a junior, decided to declare early. The biggest concern – if Pouncey were groomed to be the successor of, say, Colts center Jeff Saturday – is that Pouncey must learn to handle the traditional snap. Despite coming from a Florida program renowned for its finesse and gimmicks, Pouncey is strong and tough and should thrive at the next level. Do not be surprised to see Indianapolis snap up Pouncey late in the first round; particularly because Indy’s o-line is somewhat weak and Saturday is a grizzled vet. Colts GM Bill Polian also loves drafting offense high and finding bargain-bin defenders later in the draft.

J.D. WALTON – Baylor

Waco’s Walton will likely be the first center off the board, as early as the second round. Like Iupati, Walton’s greatest strength is run blocking. He packs a lot of strength in a 6”3, 300 lb frame. He has very strong hands that are adept at latching on and creating momentum. Walton also served as a leader on a crappy Baylor football team and was a three-year starter. The downside is that Walton isn’t an impressive athlete, but he reminds some of the Giants’ Shaun O’Hara – a scrappy technician who gets the job done. It helped that Walton didn’t embarrass himself at the Combine; his three-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle, in particular, were respectable.

JON ASAMOAH – Illinois

This senior guard increased his stock with a strong final season for the Illini. At 6”5, 320 lbs, Asamoah possesses all the requisite size needed. He started building his resume a couple seasons ago whilst carving holes out for current Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall. Illinois took a strong run game all the way to the Rose Bowl that season with Asamoah earning Honorable Mention all-Big Ten honors. Asamoah is also a surprisingly good pass blocker; he’s overlooked because he played on such a crap team this year. As scouts watch him work through his drills, they will warm up to Asamoah en masse.

JOHN JERRY – Ole Miss

Even before watching on-field maulings, the Rebels’ Jerry has the size and pros in his bloodline to be an NFL lock. Going at 6”5, 350 lbs, if a defender can’t get around Jerry, they’re going to be wiped out. Also, John’s brother Peria was a first-rounder for Atlanta last year and the Jerrys also have two cousins who played in the NFL – Dwayne Rudd and Eddie Strong. Jerry has been all-conference SEC the past couple seasons and though he played at RT for Ole Miss, he projects as a guard in the pros. One major downside to Jerry is his inability to deal with speed, which is why he looks better working in a phone booth at one of the interior line positions. His strengths match up really well with a team like the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Honorable Mention: MITCH PETRUS, Arkansas – This Razorbacks guard wowed everyone at the Combine with a ridiculous 45 reps on the bench. This young man is a beast.

Onto the 2010 Offensive Lineman – Offensive Tackle Rankings – (OT Ratings)

RUSSELL OKUNG, Oklahoma State

While others may have bulged eyeballs at the Combine or enticed scouts with various measurables, Okung is singularly the best tackle in the 2010 class. At 6”5, 300 lbs, he has the right amount of size for the NFL, given his prodigious athletic talents. Particularly at tackle, Okung’s long arms are a tremendous asset. He could start for a team at left tackle from day one; in addition to looking the part, Okung did a great job protecting Cowboys’ pivot Zac Robinson over the years. He made 34 straight starts for Oklahoma State and given that his size is merely adequate – not supreme – he’s a surprisingly physical run blocker. Okung should be a top five pick.

BRYAN BULAGA, Iowa

People think about offensive tackles from Iowa and the first guy that comes to mind is Robert Gallery; they subsequently start quaking in their boots. Bulaga, however, projects as a very solid NFL player. At 6”6, 312, he plays with excellent functional strength and has a knack for generating leverage by getting low. Like a lot of Big Ten offensive lineman, Bulaga is a great technician who uses his hands well. In conference play the past couple seasons, if Bulaga locked onto a guy, the battle was over. He doesn’t have the fantastic athleticism of Okung or Maryland’s Bruce Campbell, but Bulaga should be a joy to coach and will seldom look foolish in the NFL. If Okung is off the board when the K.C. Chiefs pick at five, Bulaga would fill a need for them.

BRUCE CAMPBELL, Maryland

Campbell catapulted his stock by blowing scouts on their keesters at the Combine. He is a hulking 6”7, 310 lbs, yet apparently ran a mind-blowing 4.78 forty-yard dash (he is officially clocked at 4.85 seconds on NFL.com, which is still ridiculous for a man that size). Campbell buttressed that performance with a respectable 34 reps on the bench. The man is clearly an athletic specimen and scouts also love his fluidity; he moves his hips and shoulders very well. Campbell is the type of player traditionally right in the Oakland Raiders’ wheelhouse. Despite injury concerns, he could quite possibly go to Oakland with the eighth overall pick.

TRENT WILLIAMS, Oklahoma

The Sooners’ veteran tackle was another player to vastly increase his stock at the Combine. In the forty-times, Williams was on Bruce Campbell’s tail, blazing a 4.88 going at 6”5, 315 lbs. Williams has the ability to add more bulk with an NFL weight-training program and might be better suited playing right tackle at the next level. He is an instinctive player that hones his craft with balance and dexterity. In college, he was able to handle elite speed off the edge, which makes Williams versatile to potentially play either side. Scouts have described that “once [Williams] smells blood, he gets nastier.” High praise; this bundle of traits will get Williams drafted in the first round in a deep OT pool.

ANTHONY DAVIS, Rutgers

Unlike the other top tier candidates, Davis’ reputation has stagnated somewhat after uninspired Combine efforts and poor interviews. Yet, he is still in elite company in terms of talent and potential. The Scarlet Knight is plenty stout at 6”5, 323 lbs. Davis is adept at getting to the second level and playing in space. He can be overwhelming with run blocking when he wants to be, but it seems like he turns it on and off a little more frequently than those who project higher than him. A poor work ethic and a questionable love for the game will scare some teams away, but Davis is still an athletic gem with tremendous upside. He’ll be a first or very early second-round pick.

Honorable Mention: JASON FOX, Miami-Fl: Observers have long raved about Fox’s (a former TE) athleticism. It should be enough to put him on someone’s radar.

We begin with the 2010 Defensive Tackle Ratings (DT Rankings)

NDAMUKONG SUH, Nebraska

A lot of scouts and draftniks are high on Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy as the best in a 2010 NFL Draft loaded at defensive tackle. He is the premier pass-rushing DT and the NFL is a passing league, they say. However, Suh is the stronger, more complete player (he put up 32 reps on the bench as opposed to McCoy’s 23) – and he can get to the quarterback himself. Four sacks versus Texas in the Big 12 title game is nothing to sneeze at. Suh alone took the Huskers’ defense to a new level, and most people will see he’ll do the same thing in the big leagues. Suh will be one of the top picks.

GERALD McCOY, Oklahoma

McCoy is a pure athletic specimen, given his size at 6”4 and just shy of 300 lbs. He has very good quickness and admirable speed at the position; he just edged Suh in the 40-yard dash (4.96 seconds to Suh’s 4.98). Scouts knew McCoy was good from day one; he was the top-rated DT coming out of high school. There’s no doubt he can be a difference maker on an NFL squad, but he should fall just behind Suh in the overall position rankings, no matter what Mike Mayock says.

DAN WILLIAMS, Tennessee

The first person people look to on the Volunteers’ defense is stud defensive back Eric Berry, but Williams is a guy that can make his presence felt in the NFL. Going at an impressive 6”3, 327 lbs, Williams has been terrorizing people in the middle of UT’s defense for several seasons now. His stats won’t jump off the page, but Williams consistently took on one or two blocks in the SEC. The veteran from Rocky Top looks like he would be a good fit for Miami or the home state Titans in the first round.

TERRENCE CODY, Alabama

The Tide’s mountain of a man projects as an elite run-stuffer at the next level if he can keep his weight under control. Many envision Cody going to the Minnesota Vikings as a replacement for the aging Pat Williams. For a man as heavy as Cody is, he’s quite nimble and has good lateral movement. Cody’s stock was slipping earlier (he showed up to the Senior Bowl weighing 370 lbs; that’s just too heavy) he has lost weight since and is near his target of 350. Cody should be a first-round pick.

GENO ATKINS, Georgia

Atkins boosted his stock considerably by having an excellent combine. He was known as a pass-rush specialist that received a lot of attention from opposing offensive lines in college. He then wowed onlookers with a 4.75 forty and a remarkable 34 reps on the bench-press – more than Suh despite surrendering about 15 lbs (Atkins goes at 6”1, 290). His speed and quickness are first-rate for the position. While Atkins is a little short for a guy who isn’t in the pure noseguard mold, he definitely asserted himself in order to possibly be snapped up in the first round, despite being a junior.

Honorable Mention: BRIAN PRICE, UCLA
