In the endless lead-up to the big game, virtually every story angle gets covered exhaustively, but one perhaps overlooked facet of the game you need to look at before making your super bowl picks could be the tight ends. Colts TE Dallas Clark is one of the best pass-catchers at his position in the league; he’s almost more like a beefy slot receiver than he is a traditional TE. [soliloquy id=”82219″] We know he can be dangerous. But the Saints also present some interesting options in Jeremy Shockey and David Thomas.
Though Shockey isn’t the player he was a few seasons ago, he’s a talented, tough, battle-tested vet. Thomas usually flies under the radar and can be a solid unheralded target for Drew Brees.
If Brees and Indy’s Peyton Manning want to scale down the gambles in this game and limit the risk of picks, finding their tight ends in the seam is a logical notion. Much is discussed about the two great quarterbacks, the receiver arsenals and the impact defensive players, but it could be Clark getting open downfield or Shockey grabbing a critical first down that makes the difference. I’m not saying you should expect Tom Santi to have a career day; I just think that everyone will have their eye on [Indy’s] Reggie Wayne and [New Orleans’] Marques Colston. It might be someone you’d normally gloss over that will make a crucial play – especially with Brees and Manning’s penchant for incorporating everyone in the attack.
