Well the hour is almost upon us and by the time you read this you have probably dissected every matchup the Big Game could possibly present. A lot is being written about the fantastic QBs, as well as the close battle for Defensive Player of the Year between Troy Polamalu and Clay Matthews. But now is the time to look a little more closely about how these teams have fared for us interested sports investors this season.
When you are looking at Packers Steelers gambling the thing that jumps out is how good these teams have been against the spread this year. Sure they have made the Super Bowl so obviously they have won some games but these teams were a combined 24-13-1 this season and each has covered in all of their playoffs victories. That number doesn’t exactly shift your mind one way or the other in terms of who to back but whichever side you choose you know you can say you are backing a point spread money maker – which certainly helps with confidence.
Right now Green Bay is sitting as a 2.5 point favourite which is interesting given that they were a Wild Card team as opposed to the division winning Steelers (not sure if this is a first). This season Green Bay was in the short favourite role (-1 to -3) a total of 7 times going 4-3 ATS in those situations. On the other side of the Packers Steelers gambling equation, the Steelers were 1-0 as an underdog in that range this year. Not a ton of data to work on from this side although it is interesting to note how often the Packers were in this spread range. Nearly half their spread losses came from close games like many think this one will be. 
The figure or figures that I find the most compelling (right now) is how Packers QB Aaron Rodgers is downright lethal in a dome for his career. The most recent evidence was his dismantling of the Atlanta Falcons just a few weeks ago but his career numbers under a roof are staggeringly good while his opposite Be Roethlisberger is just better than average – not horrible by any stretch. The numbers might just be pre-Super Bowl hype but in a game of this magnitude, with QBs as good as these, I think it is import to try and project which one is likely to be the superior performer. Big Ben certainly has the Big Game pedigree but Rodgers has shown that he is no shrinking violet. Which QB is going to play best is certainly important when making your final Packers-Steelers gambling decision.
Its the Super Bowl so there is more information about this game than it probably warrants. Still with an estimate of 10 billion dollars being wagered clearly the Big Game is big business for the books. But with so much scrutiny how do you get an edge though is the Packers-Steelers gambling conundrum. Some say props are the way to go and you can bet on everything including how long the national anthem will be. I tend to agree but sometimes the props are over and done with so quickly that watching the game becomes pretty boring. I say for this one play it old school and just pick the straight up winner. If you are on GB you get a decent payout (1.74) and if you like the Steelers you can double your money (2.15).
