Sports News – NHL news: Thrashers moving out of Atlanta? Nick Lidstrom mulling future; Sidney Crosby still can’t exercise

Nick Lidstrom mulling future

Even though it appears the Phoenix Coyotes have been saved from a move, the Atlanta Thrashers may not be so lucky. When The Atlanta Journal-Constitution asked NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly if the team would definitely play in Atlanta next season, he replied, “Nope. I can’t guarantee that.”

Atlanta already lost an NHL franchise. It had the Flames until 1980, when they moved to Calgary. Winnipeg would be the frontrunner to inherit the Thrashers if they move. Since their inception in 1999, the Thrashers  have  just one playoff appearance.

Did future Hall-of-Famer Nicklas Lidstrom play his final NHL game last night, when the San Jose Sharks eliminated his Detroit Red Wings in seven games? The 41-year-old defenseman isn’t sure.

“I’m going to take my time on my decision here in the next little while,” he said after Game 7. “I’m not sure how long I’ll take but we’ll have our year-end meetings and go on from there.”

Believe it or not, Sidney Crosby is still showing no improvement in his battle to return from a serious concussion suffered in early January. He had worked his way back to the point where he was skating at full speed in April but, after he had a setback at that point, he hasn’t worked out at all since.

NBA news: Doc Rivers to sign extension? Lakers “very interested” in Rick Adelman; All-NBA teams announced

A day after Doc Rivers suggested he would “probably” return to coach the Boston Celtics next season, general manager Danny Ainge said he was working on a multiyear contract extension for him. Rivers is 234-94 over four seasons as the Celtics’ head coach.

As they prepare for life without coach Phil Jackson, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly “very interested” in Rick Adelman. Adelman is eighth on the NBA’s all-time wins list and has taken the Portland Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals twice. He and the Houston Rockets mutually parted ways after missing the playoffs this past season.

MLB news: Ike Davis lands on DL; Nolan Ryan assumes controlling ownership of Rangers

New York Mets first baseman Ike Davis’ breakout 2011 campaign came to a screeching halt on Tuesday when he collided with teammate David Wright while fielding an infield popout. The Mets have placed him on the 15-day DL with a sprained left ankle and a bone bruise. He’s expected to miss two or more weeks. Davis was hitting .302 with seven homers and 25 RBI through 36 games.

Already the CEO of the Texas Rangers, Nolan Ryan has now been approved by Major League Baseball as the team’s controlling owner. He bought the club from Tom Hicks along with a group that included Chuck Greenberg but Greenberg sold his ownership stake.

NBA news: DeSean Jackson making a pitch to Asomugha; Marques Colston had microfracture surgery; McNabb responds to Hopkins

The Philadelphia Eagles are hungry for a Super Bowl next season and top wideout DeSean Jackson has joined the recruiting process. He told a radio station Thursday that he plans to make a pitch to free-agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who is considered one of the league’s top two cover cornerbacks. Jackson and Asomugha were teammates at the University of California.

New Orleans Saints receiver Marques Colston admitted this week that he had microfracture surgery on his right knee after the 2010 season. The team had been cryptic about the procedure. Colston had microfracture surgery on his other knee in 2009. Gulp. Hate that word. Microfracture. Don’t draft him to your fantasy team!

On Wednesday, Philadelphia boxer Bernard Hopkins called  out Donovan McNabb for not being black enough and growing up in a Chicago suburb instead of on the streets. McNabb responded through agent Fletcher Smith on Thursday.

“It perpetuates a maliciously inaccurate stereotype that insinuates those African-Americans who have access to a wider variety of resources are somehow culturally different than their brethren,” Smith said. He added that McNabb  is “unapologetically proud of sacrifices [his parents] made for him. Donovan and his brother were raised to be hard-working African-American men who were taught to believe in themselves.”
