Water Cooler – September 13th, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

After the NFL’s opening Sunday, it feels like half the league went down to injury, doesn’t it? Let’s sort through the wreckage in today’s news.

NFL news: Matt Stafford out with shoulder injury; Matt Moore, Kevin Kolb concussed; Randy Moss calls out team

Randy Moss Is Not A Happy Camper

Though there was plenty of good to discuss, which you can read about in today’s NFL roundup, plenty of big-name players went down yesterday.

Most notably, Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford looks like he’ll miss about six weeks with a shoulder injury he suffered after Julius Peppers hit him yesterday. He’s scheduled for an X-Ray and MRI today.

The Philadelphia Eagles got absolutely decimated in their loss to Green Bay yesterday. Fullback Leonard Weaver tore his ACL and will miss the rest of 2010. Center Jamaal Jackson is also likely out for the year after tearing his bicep.

Newly anointed starting quarterback Kevin Kolb only lasted a half before leaving with a concussion.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Moore also got concussed yesterday against the New York Giants. Packers running back Ryan Grant suffered the dreaded high ankle sprain, as did Steelers left tackle Max Starks. The woeful Buffalo Bills may have lost Paul Posluszny to a long-term knee injury as well.

Injuries aside, we also saw some locker-room drama in Week 1. After San Francisco got blown out by Seattle, 49ers coach Mike Singletary called out quarterback Alex Smith and wideout Michael Crabtree for poor play. Randy Moss also spoke out about the Patriots not making an effort to re-sign him.

“There hasn’t been anything said. Not a letter, not nothing…I’m hurt,” he said.

MLB news: Rockies win 10th straight game

It’s simply amazing to see the Colorado Rockies do the same thing every September. Here we go again. After Jason Giambi’s walkoff homer yesterday versus Arizona, the Rockies have won 10 straight games. They’ve pulled to within a game and a half of San Diego and San Francisco in the National League West.

Colorado starts a crucial three-game series against the Padres tonight at Coors Field.

NBA news: Darius Miles attempts comeback with Charlotte Bobcats; Team USA wins world basketball championship

Was Darius Miles a bust? Expectations were high when the Los Angeles Clippers drafted him third overall in 2000 and, while he wasn’t an utter disaster, he was close. It took him five seasons to get his scoring average into double figures and he never scored more than 14 per game. He’s barely played at all since having microfracture knee surgery in 2006.

Still, Miles is just 28 years old. The Charlotte Bobcats wonder if he has some good basketball left in him, so they’ve signed him to a non-guaranteed contract.

Team USA won the world basketball championship on Sunday, beating Turkey 81-64 and riding a 28-point effort from tournament MVP Kevin Durant.

You’d think the win wasn’t news but the title was actually Team USA’s first at the worlds since 1994.
