NBA news: Cavaliers to beef up security for LeBron’s return to Cleveland

Cavaliers to beef up security

Could LeBron James’ first game in Cleveland since blowing town rival the Malice at the Palace? The Cavaliers seem to think so. They will have dozens of extra police offers, some in uniform and some undercover, on hand for the Heat/Cavs game on December 2. Some will be positioned near the Heat bench and at the tunnel where they enter the court.

Arena officials will also confiscate any anti-LeBron signs or clothing worn by anyone arriving at the game. They’ll hand out Cavs T-shirts to wear instead. Seems like Cleveland already has the situation under control. But you have to admit – that’s a tiny bit disappointing, isn’t it?

NFL news: Titans co-ordinator Heimerdinger back at work, battling cancer; Black Eyed Peas at Super Bowl

Tennessee Titans offensive co-ordinator Mike Heimerdinger has cancer but won’t let it stop him from calling plays this Sunday against Houston. He’ll perform his usual duties before starting his cancer treatment Monday. We wish him the best.

For those who care about who lip-synchs, er, plays the Super Bowl halftime show – it’ll be the Black Eyed Peas this year. They’ve sold 28 million albums worldwide. Last year’s act was The Who.

NHL news: Canucks grant Rick Rypien leave of absence

Troubled Vancouver Canucks forward Rick Rypien, who made headlines when he got a six-game suspension for grabbing a Minnesota fan on his way to the dressing room, is taking an indefinite leave of absence.

The Canucks granted him the leave; it’s the second time in three years that he’s left the team to deal with personal matters. So far, no information has been released detailing what his problem is, be it physical, mental or legal. In case you’re wondering – -yes, he is related to former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien. They’re cousins.

UFC news: Jose Aldo pulls out of UFC 125 title defense; Herschel Walker off Strikeforce card

If you’re a big UFC fan, this news stings. Featherweight Jose Aldo is considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world among many pundits, right up there with Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva. When the UFC and WEC merged, Aldo got moved up to the big leagues and became the UFC’s first ever featherweight champion.

We were slated to see him make his UFC debut on New Year’s Day, but it isn’t happening. During training for his bout with Josh Grispi, Aldo suffered a compacted vertebrae, causing tingling in both his arms. He’s reportedly out three months.

Former NFL star Herschel Walker won his first fight with Strikeforce and was slated to fight next week but had to pull out due to injury this week. He suffered a cut during training that required seven stitches to close and won’t be sufficiently healed by December 4, when he was supposed to face Scott Carson.
