Mike Danton To Play Canadian University Hockey?

Disgraced, former NHLer Mike Danton will hold a news conference tomorrow to discuss his future with the University of St. Mary’s hockey team. Danton, who was convicted in 2004 of a bizarre, murder conspiracy of his then-agent David Frost, with whom he had a strange, cult-like relationship, was released from prison in September 2009 after serving over five years in a U.S. federal prison.

But the 29-year-old former St. Louis Blue has been given a second chance by at least one organization – the St. Mary’s University in Nova Scotia, Canada. Because of his parole, Danton is not allowed to cross the border, thereby preventing any hope for resurrecting his professional career, making Canadian university hockey a convenient option. But, understandably, this has created much controversy.

Danton is technically eligible to play under Canadian Interuniversity Sport regulations. Huskies coach Trevor Stienburg claims that he came to accept the idea of allowing Danton on his team after talking to his father, an ordained minister, who preached the idea of second chances all of his life.

But this has brought up a fundamental question – where is the line between giving a second chance to someone who has served his time, and hiring a convict as a ringer?

Nevertheless, Danton has already been given permission by the parole board to move to Nova Scotia, and was granted enrolment as a full-time student by the president of St. Mary`s.

Time will only tell if a successful return to the ice is in Danton’s future.
