MLB news: Carlos Zambrano injures back
First off Happy Canada Day to our Canadian friends…
Lots going on in Major League Baseball over the last 24 hours. First off, Carlos Zambrano left his start against the San Francisco Giants because of soreness in his lower back.
Even though the Cubs are out of contention, the injury is noteworthy because Zambrano has been the subject of trade rumors.
Home run derby to have captains
After the success of the NHL’s “captains” format for the All-Star Game, it’s no surprise to see Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby follow suit. Under the new format, an American and National League captain will each choose three players to compete on his squad. Every player will be eligible – not simply All-Stars.
The captains this season will be Prince Fielder for the NL and defending derby champion David Ortiz for the AL.
Teixeira hits 300th homer
Mark Teixeira is the eighth switch-hitter in MLB history to smack 300 homers. The New York Yankees first baseman went deep yesterday to take the current season lead at 25 dingers. The homer was his 300th overall. Tex joins Chipper Jones and Lance Berkman as the other active switch-hitters with 300 dingers. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
Ellis traded to Rockies
The Colorado Rockies acquired second baseman Mark Ellis and cash considerations from the Colorado Rockies yesterday for reliever Bruce Billings and a player to be named. Ellis, 34, is batting just .217 on the year. Billings, 25, debuted in the bigs in May.
Oswalt to see spine surgeon
The Phantastic Phour in Philadelphia has been the Phantastic Three of late, as Roy Oswalt’s back continues to keep him sidelined. Today, he plans to meet with a spinal surgeon. He seeks a second opinion on the bulging disc in his back. He wants to avoid surgery but wants assurance that he won’t rupture the disc.
If he doesn’t need surgery, he could return by August.
