Sports News – NBA news: Cavaliers win draft lottery; Knicks pursuing Ramon Sessions; Grizz not trading Rudy Gay

NBA news: Cavaliers win draft lottery

Could we see a quick and immediate turnaround in Cleveland next year? The Cavaliers won the draft lottery last night. They’ll pick first overall and they also have the fourth overall pick.

Rumor has it that the Cavs could make point guard Ramon Sessions available in light of their draft position, as they might pick Kyrie Irving first overall. The New York Knicks are reportedly interested in acquiring him. Sessions has two years left on a four-year, $16-million deal. He averaged a career-high 13.3 points and 5.2 assists last season.

Even though the Memphis Grizzlies made a big statement by making a surprisingly deep playoff run without Rudy Gay, they have no intention of trading him.

“Would you please make it clear that we’re not trading Rudy Gay?” Team owner Michael Heisley told The Memphis Commercial Appeal last summer. He added, “No disrespect to Oklahoma City, but if we had Rudy Gay, we would have won the…series going away.”

NHL news: Thornton tried to fight Kesler; Pavel Kubina’s status “not good”; Mike Richards to lose captaincy? Daniel Carcillo suspended

Believe it or not, Joe Thornton tried to start the Western Conference final between his San Jose Sharks and the Vancouver Canucks in style – or so he claims. Thornton said yesterday that he challenged Ryan Kesler to a fight off the opening draw. He tried to bury his head into Kesler’s chin while egging him on; Kesler declined the invitation and Thornton was kicked out of the faceoff circle.

The Tampa Bay Lightning don’t expect Pavel Kubina (head) to join them in the Eastern Conference final any time soon. He hasn’t played since taking an elbow from Jason Chimera on April 29 and reportedly hasn’t even skated. “He’s not even [with the team], so the update is not very good,” said Tampa head coach Guy Boucher. “Every day there seems to be a little progression, it kind of slips back a bit.”

A couple of stories came out of Philadelphia today – one surprising, the other not so much. It appears captain Mike Richards and Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette aren’t getting along – to the point that Richards may be asked to relinquish his captaincy.

“Mike and I continue to work on our relationship,” Laviolette recently said. “I respect him. I like Mike as a person and we continue to work on that.”

In the expected twist, Flyers winger Daniel Carcillo has been suspended for the first two games of 2011-12 for displaying “aggressive behavior and inappropriate conduct directed at officials” between the first and second period of Game 4 against Boston on May 6.

MLB news: Wright, Teahen, Matsuzaka hit DL

Most of the latest MLB news is injury-related. As expected, the New York Mets have placed David Wright (stress fracture in back) on the 15-day DL. He suffered the injury on April 19 while diving to tag Houston’s Carlos Lee. He’s forbidden from baseball activities for at least 10 days.

Daisuke Matsuzaka’s resurgence this season was apparently short-lived. After an MRI revealed an elbow sprain, the Boston Red Sox placed the right-hander on the 15-day DL. He joins John Lackey there.

Mark Teahen was supposed to get an extended look as the Chicago White Sox’s starting third baseman but it wasn’t to be. He landed on the 15-day DL with a strained oblique muscle and will be replaced by Dallas McPherson, a.k.a. the guy whose picture appears next to “Quad-A player” in the baseball dictionary.
