Sports News – NBA news: Celtics sign Trophy Murphy; Mike Bibby to Miami? Starting spots “up for grabs” in Detroit

Celtics sign Trophy Murphy

Troy Murphy, a free agent after the Golden State Warriors bought him out this week, spurned the Miami Heat for the Boston Celtics. He should sign a deal today. He averaged 3.6 points and 4.2 boards this season and hasn’t played since the New Jersey Nets sent him home on January 7.

Another freshly bought out player, Mike Bibby, looks like he’ll go to Miami. Bibby got his buyout from Washington earlier this week, giving up $6 million. The point guard is expected to sign with the Heat today after the Heat cut Carlos Arroyo to open up roster space.

Reportedly, Bibby spoke with LeBron James after a game last week. LeBron isn’t revealing what was said but put it this way: “I gave him the eye and I guess the eye worked.”

Whether there’s a full-fledged mutiny led by Rip Hamilton happening in Detroit or not, head coach John Kuester isn’t relinquishing power. This week, he said no starting role was secure. The team is supposedly starting from square one, as anyone who works hard in practice, shootarounds and games will get increased playing time going forward.

Tennis news: Serena Williams hospitalized with blood clot in lungs

Tennis great Serena Williams got a major health scare this week. On Monday, a day after she was out and about at the Vanity Fair Oscars party, Serena had surgery to repair a blood blog in or lungs, also known as a pulmonary embolism. It’s too early to know if the procedure will keep her out of the French Open.

MLB news: No more financial help for Mets from MLB; No green light for Justin Morneau; Garret Anderson retires

The New York Mets are cashed strapped. Their owners are battling a $1 billion lawsuit from the trustee recovering funds from the infamous Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme and need to sell 20 to 25 per cent of the team. Last November, Major League Baseball loaned the Mets $25 million. However, even though they’re still broke, the Mets will no longer get any financial support from the league, reports the New York Times.

The Minnesota Twins aren’t out of the woods with Justin Morneau’s concussion woes just yet. The former American League MVP still hasn’t been cleared to rejoin the Twins’ lineup. He’s resumed batting practice and fielding drills without setbacks but hasn’t played in a game since July 7 of last season.

Garret Anderson was still playing pro baseball? Apparently he was, because he just retired. The 38-year-old leaves behind a solid career, primarily with the Los Angeles Angels, for whom he knocked in 100 runs four straight times from 2000 to 2003 He knew his days are numbered when he batted .181 with three homers in 80 games for the Dodgers last season.

NFL news: Saints sign Shaun Rogers; Carson Palmer gets ugly with Bengals; LT returning to Jets; Labor dispute update

Defensive tackle Shaun Rogers hopes to revive his career with the New Orleans Saints after being cut by the Cleveland Browns. He never started 2010 on the right foot after his airport gun charge and recorded just two sacks all season. New Orleans signed him to a one-year, $4-million deal.

The feud between Carson Palmer and the Cincinnati Bengals just won’t go away. In fact, it’s intensifying. It was reported this week that Palmer, Cincy’s longtime franchise quarterback, told a friend that he’d “never set foot in Paul Brown Stadium again.” I don’t think Palmer thought about road games when he said that but we get the point. He really, really doesn’t want to be a Bengal. Palmer said he has plenty of money saved and wants to play somewhere else.

Future Hall-of-Famer LaDainian Tomlinson will remain a New York Jet next season. He enjoyed a nice comeback in 2010 with Gang Green, rushing for 914 yards and catching 52 passes. He’ll make $2.4 million next season.

Quick labor dispute update: the current collective bargaining agreement expires on 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday and talks are continuing. All 10 members of the NFL owners’ labor committee and Drew Brees attended Wednesday’s mediation session between the two sides.
