Sports News – NHL news: Chris Pronger out a month; Colby Armstrong out for season? Sidney Crosby skates for 15 minutes

Sidney Crosby skates for 15 minutes

The Philadelphia Flyers have a playoff berth locked up – but will their top defenseman be ready for the first round? Chris Pronger had surgery today to repair a broken right hand and will miss three to four weeks.

It doesn’t really matter since they’re sliding out of the playoff race anyway but the Toronto Maple Leafs may not have Colby Armstrong for the rest of 2010-11. The agitator broke his foot blocking a slapshot from Tampa’s Mike Lundin on Monday night. Armstrong has played just 50 games this season, having already missed time with finger and eye injuries.

Sidney Crosby skated yesterday for the first time since suffering a serious concussion in early January. He was able to exercise because he was finally symptom-free for a few days. However, Sid the Kid still looks like he’s a long way from getting medical clearance to play. The Penguins are 14-10-5 in his absence.

NFL news: Chris Cook faces hearing on gun charge; Atwan Odom’s house burns down; NFLPA urges players to skip draft

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Chris Cook will face a hearing next week for a gun charge. He was arrested this past weekend after he allegedly brandished a gun during an argument with a neighbour. Cook denied pulling the gun but was arrested anyway. Under Virginia law, a person can be arrested if a citizen swears out a criminal warrant.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Antwan Odom is homeless. His $1.1-million home burned down early Tuesday in Mason, Ohio. Luckily, he and his family weren’t inside when the blaze broke out.

The NFL Players Association is trying to stage an NFL draft boycott. That doesn’t mean the players want prospects to “undeclare” for the draft – only that they simply want them not to show up. Reportedly, the NFLPA has contacted 17 top recruits and urged them not to attend Radio City Music Hall on draft night. That way, when their names are announced, players won’t be on hand to accept a jersey from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell or to do interviews with ESPN and the NFL Network.

NBA news: Devin Harris injures hamstring; Marc Gasol injures ankle

Devin Harris, the key acquisition in Utah’s Deron Williams trade, may be shelved for the foreseeable future. The guard injured his right hamstring in the fourth quarter of the Jazz’s win over Philadelphia last night. He tried to return but the pain was too severe. His status is up in the air for now.

The Memphis Grizzlies were staying in the playoff hunt without injured Rudy Gay – but now they have Marc Gasol to worry about, too. The center injured his ankle last night in Memphis’ victory over the Clippers. X-rays were negative, so Gasol appears to have a sprain.

MLB news: Andrew Bailey has elbow pain, date with Dr. James Andrews

Uh-oh. It’s a good thing the Oakland Athletics have such a deep bullpen. They know what they’re doing. It seems closer and 2009 American League Rookie of the Year Andrew Bailey can’t stay healthy. He left Monday’s game with pain in his throwing elbow. He’s scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews today. Andrews performed Tommy John surgery on Bailey in 2005.
