Tuesday Water Cooler – June 15th, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

What? Pardon? SORRY, I CAN’T HEAR YOU! It’s those damn vuvuzelas. Sorry, folks, but they’re not going anywhere at the World Cup. I’ll explain why in the daily news.

World Cup news: FIFA President supports vuvuzelas; Gigi Buffon’s back problem “serious”

Unless you’re a monk and/or deaf, chances are you’ve been driven mad by the bee-like horns blown by every friggin’ fan at every South African stadium during the 2010 World Cup. Thousands of fans are complaining. Facebook groups are popping ups. YouTube videos are getting made. But the vuvuzelas are here to stay.

South Africa insists that the vuvuzela horn is a rich part of its tradition and that it’s they’re equivalent to the singing we hear at most soccer stadiums. To eliminate the vuvuzelas, they say, is to rob them of the way they’ve always celebrated the sport. South African players say it feels weird to play anywhere without the vuvuzelas.

FIFA president Joseph Blatter defended the Vuvuzela. He asked fans around the world, “Would you want to see a ban on the fan traditions in your country?” and said “Africa has a different rhythm, a different sound.”

The road to defending the World Cup title just got a lot tougher for Italy. Azzurri goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon exited at halftime during Monday’s 1-1 draw against Paraguay suffering from a reportedly “serious” problem with his left sciatic nerve. No timetable has been set for his return, though the team doctor said it’s uncertain whether the star goalie will return at all during the World Cup.

NBA news: Doc Rivers done in Boston? Antoine Walker facing trial

Even though he’s putting on a clinic against the Lakers in the NBA Finals, Doc Rivers may have coached his last home game with the Boston Celtics. His children are high-school seniors in Orlando and he reportedly wants to be home to see them play basketball and volleyball.

Remember Antoine Walker? He probably wishes you didn’t. The former NBA All-Star and first-round pick got an order from a judge to face trial on felony bad check charges stemming from his massive gambling debts at Las Vegas casinos. Walker filed for bankruptcy last month, claiming $12.7 million in liabilities and $4.3 million in assets. The man should’ve spent more time with Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley. They could’ve taught him how to weasel out of this one!

NHL news: Toews to grace cover of NHL 11

Has there been a better year for one hockey player in recent memory? Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews won an Olympic gold medal with Canada, was named best forward at the tourney, won the Conn Smythe trophy as NHL playoff MVP and, of course, hoisted the Stanley Cup.

Continuing his trend of awesomeness, the news has been leaked that Toews will grace the cover of EA Sports NHL 11. Superstitious fans need not worry; there’s no real cover curse a-la-Madden. After all, last year’s cover boy was Patrick Kane, who may or may not have scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in overtime.

Hardcore gamers are already outraged over EA Sports’ “bias” in using Blackhawk cover boys two years in a row; they’ve never used the same team in consecutive years before.

Another ex-cover model, Dion Phaneuf, was named captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs yesterday.
