Water Cooler – July 22nd, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

Just when we thought we couldn’t have any more NBA shockers this summer…we get a new twist. Chris Paul kicks off today’s news.

NBA news: Chris Paul officially requests trade

Chris Paul Requests To Be Traded!

All-World point guard Chris Paul has two seasons left on his contract with the New Orleans Hornets. But that apparently doesn’t matter.

Paul has officially requested a trade and wants a new team by the start of the 2010-11 season.

I have to admit – the rumored suitors are pretty interesting. The Knicks are intriguing because it would be amazing to see what kind of numbers Paul could post in a Mike D’Antoni offense. The Lakers are intriguing too because they’d suddenly field a team almost as formidable as Miami will.

NFL news: Jimmy Johnson on Survivor? Favre has gained 14 pounds since January

Well, this should be something. We got to know Jimmy Johnson by watching his hair flop on the sidelines when he guided the Dallas Cowboys dynasty in the 1990s. Then we listened to his rants on Fox NFL broadcasts. Now…we’ll watch him compete on Survivor?

Yep. The 67-year old will appear as a contestant on the next season, which debuts in September. An old guy who also doesn’t need the money? I’m sure he’ll do great.

I hate to sound like I’m running a tabloid – but I feel the need to report that Brett Favre has gained 14 pounds since January. I’m just sayin’ – it’s something worth noting if you’re prepping your NFC North futures bet.

MLB news: Multiple Dodgers suspended after wild game against Giants; Cards “front runners” for Oswalt

If you didn’t see the highlights from Tuesday’s circus game between the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers – go find them. The chaos started with Tim Lincecum losing his control. It was almost Rick Ankiel-like. He tossed a ball straight up in the air, another behind Matt Kemp, and a third into Kemp’s ribs.

Then things got ugly. Denny Bautista threw at Russell Martin. Clayton Kershaw threw at Aaron Rowand. Don Mattingly stepped off the mound during a visit and was charged with two mound visits, forcing him to remove Jonathan Broxton from the game. A cold George Sherrill then gave up the winning hit.

In the end, a truckload of Dodgers have been suspended. Clayton Kershaw got five games. Manager Joe Torre got a game, as did bench coach Bob Schafer. What I don’t understand is why all the bans are on the Dodgers. Didn’t the Giants start the fracas?

The Roy Oswalt sweepstakes are heating up. The St. Louis Cardinals have reportedly leapfrogged Philadelphia to become the frontrunners to land Roy Oswalt.

The Astros have been in talks with their division rivals for several days and, apparently, Oswalt would “love” to pitch for St. Louis. A deal would mean the Cards would send top pitching prospect Shelby Miller to Houston.

Also drawing interest on the trade market: MLB home run leader Jose Bautista. The Blue Jays are getting bites from the Giants, Tigers, White Sox and Braves.

It’s not surprising since he has just a million bucks left on his 2010 salary.
