MLB news: Matt Garza heading to Cubs in eight-player trade

Matt Garza To The Cubs

The deal isn’t necessarily finalized but the Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to send right-handed starter Matt Garza to the Chicago Cubs in an eight-player swap. In return for Garza, who should become the Cubs’ No. 2 starter, Tampa will receive pitching prospect Chris Archer, outfielder Brandon Guyer, catcher Robinson Chirnos, shortstop Hak-Ju Lee and outfielder Sam Fuld. The Rays will also send a minor-league pitcher and hitter to Chicago.

Garza was 15-10 with a 3.91 ERA for Tampa last season.

NFL news: Dolphins out of Harbaugh sweepstakes, Niners lock him up for five years; Cowboys name Jason Garrett full-time coach

One day it sounds like the Miami Dolphins are in the lead for Jim Harbaugh’s services; the next, they’re out of the running. The Dolphins will instead retrain Tony Sparano as head coach.

UPDATE: As I typed the paragraph above, Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers have signed Harbaugh to a five-year contract. Stay tuned.

Jason Garrett, likely Leslie Frazier in Minnesota, has shifted from interim to full-time head coach in Dallas. The Cowboys will bring him back in 2011 after they went 5-3 down the stretch with Garrett replacing Wade Phillips. Garrett will reportedly retain his offensive co-ordinator duties as well.

NHL news: Devils trade Jamie Langenbrunner back to Dallas

Jamie Langenbrunner is free of the swamp and back with the team that drafted him. The lowly New Jersey Devils shipped their captain to the Dallas Stars today for a conditional third-round 2011 draft pick. The 35-year-old Langenbrunner was drafted by Dallas in 1993 and traded to New Jersey in 2002. He won a Stanley Cup with the Stars in 1999 and Devils in 2003. After two straight seasons of 60-plus points, He has just 14 in 31 games this year and is a minus-15.

NBA news: Yao has foot surgery, career may be over

Yao Ming’s once-promising NBA career may be ending with a whimper. He missed all of last year due to reconstructive foot surgery and played just five games this season before a stress fracture in his left ankle sidelined him. He had surgery to repair it yesterday and his career may be over.

PGA news: Camilo Villegas disqualified from Hyundai after TV viewer catches rules violation

Here’s an odd story from the PGA: Camilo Villegas has been disqualified from the 2011 PGA Tour opener, the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, because a TV viewer caught him breaking a rule and called it in.

Villegas swatted away a loose piece of grass in front of his divot as a chip shot was rolling back down a hill toward him. That broke the rule stating “when a ball is in motion, a loose impediment that might influence the movement of the ball must not be removed.” It was a two shot penalty, meaning his scorecard was wrong, so he was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
