Today’s Sports News – NFL news: Tennessee Titans, Jeff Fisher part ways; Plaxico Burress to play in 2011?

Tennessee Titans, Jeff Fisher part ways

Considering that Bud Adams and the Tennessee Titans handed Vince Young his walking papers after the 2011 regular season, it was a bit of a shock to learn yesterday that the team and coach Jeff Fisher had mutually parted ways after 16 years. Wasn’t it supposed to be Young or Fisher – not both? Since the Titans’ 1999 season in which they made a run to the Super Bowl, Fisher’s record is 110-82, good for seventh in the NFL. He was the NFL’s longest tenured coach.

Could Plaxico Burress go straight from jail to the NFL next season? His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, believes so. Rosenhaus predicted this week that Burress “will be playing in 2011, and he will play very well. And it will be a very happy ending to a very tough, tough story. “Can Burress still make an impact at age 34?

Was Aaron Rodgers concussed last Sunday on the helmet-to-helmet hit he took from Julius Peppers? Some conspiracy theorists wonder about it. Several concussion experts have commented to the media this week that Rodgers’ “gaze” after the hit was glassy-eyed and out of focus, suggesting he may have been concussed. They also pointed out that his throws were completely off for the rest of the game. It’s a scary thought considering Rodgers had already suffered two concussions this season.

Twitter war! Antonio Cromartie said earlier this week that the NFL players and owners need to strike a deal to avoid a lockout. He met some backlash from players, including Matt Hasselbeck, who tweeted, “Somebody ask Cromartie if he knows what CBA stands for.”

Hasselbeck deleted the post but Cromartie learned about it. He responded: “hey Matt if u have something to say be a man about it. Don’t erase it. I will smash ur face in.” Hasselbeck got the backpedalling after that: “Sorry for the joke man. No hard feelings. DB’s & QB’s have a hard time getting along I guess sometimes. Lol.” Awkward.

NBA news: Nets send Troy Murphy home; O.J. Mayo suspended for positive drug test

You can’t call Avery Johnson’s methods in New Jersey unoriginal. Earlier this season, the Nets head coach sent Terrence Williams, a 2009 first-round pick, down to the D-league before he was eventually traded. Now, Johnson has sent Troy Murphy home. For good, it seems.

Troy Murphy will not rejoin the Nets – perhaps ever. He’s been sent home “in case” the Nets try to trade him or in case they hang on to him for use in a future re-attempt at the Carmelo Anthony trade.

The NBA has suspended Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayor for 10 games after he violated the league’s anti-drug policy. He tested positive for dehydroepiandrosterone. He said the positive test came from an over-the-counter supplement he didn’t know was banned by the league.

NHL news: Capitals extend Alex Semin

I can’t tell if it means the Washington Capitals are more or less likely to trade him – but, for what it’s worth, they’ve extended Alex Semin’s contract. They added one year at $6.7 million to his deal. The Russian sniper has been sidelined since January 8 because of a groin injury but is expected to return directly after the All-Star game.
