Today’s Sports News – NFL news: Aaron Smith expected to miss Super Bowl; Zack Follett blames Satan for Stafford remarks

Zack Follett blames Satan for Stafford remarks

While Maurkice Pouncey may return to Pittsburgh’s offensive line in time for Super Bowl XLV next weekend, defensive end Aaron Smith may not be so lucky. His triceps injury, which has kept him out of action with the Steelers for three months, will likely hold him out of the big game.

If in doubt – blame the devil himself. That’s the philosophy for Detroit Lions linebacker Zack Follett. He recently got into hot water when he referred to oft-injured teammate Matthew Stafford as a “china doll.” He took some criticism and tried to backpedal through various media outlets.

Eventually, Follett took matters into his own hands. In a five-minute video, he explained that Satan is constantly tempting him with things like girls, making him lustful. He said he conquered that trial but, as a result, Satan decided to attack him through the media.

Sigh.

MLB news: Red extend Johnny Cueto; Bartolo Colon signs with Yankees

The Cincinnati Reds locked up a key piece of their rotation yesterday, signing Johnny Cueto to a four-year, $27-million contract extension. He went 12-7 and posted 18 quality starts in 2010.

Believe it or not, Bartolo Colon isn’t quite done yet. The New York Yankees have dusted him off and signed him to a minor-league deal. The 37-year-old and former Cy Young winner hasn’t pitched since the 2009 season.

NHL news: Coyotes franchise back in jeopardy? Jewish player sues Ducks for anti-Semitism

Yesterday, Toronto radio host Bob McCown reported that the $100-millon public bond issue required to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix had “failed.” The league has since strongly denied that any deal has fallen through. So which is it? Is Phoenix safe or once again doomed?

Minor-league player Jason Bailey has sued the Anaheim Ducks organization for anti-Semitism. He claims that coaches at the Ducks former ECHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, discriminated against him because of his religion and made anti-Semitic remarks when he was part of the team.

Bailey’s lawsuit claims that Condors’ head coach Martin Raymond and assistant coach Mark Pederson denied him playing time because he was Jewish even though he was one of the team’s best players. He said the Ducks downplayed his complaints at the time and simply had the coaches write apology letters. Now, he’s property of the Ottawa Senators.

NCAA football news: 13 Iowa players hospitalized with muscle disorder

Bizarre story out of Iowa today. After a series of particularly gruelling offseason workouts that started last Thursday, 13 different players developed symptoms like soreness all over the body and discolored urine. Those 13 players have since been hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis, a stress-induced disorder that can damage cells and even cause kidney failure.

Paul Federici, Iowa’s director of football operations, said the problem was “an anomaly” and that the workouts weren’t any different from those of previous offseasons.

NCAA basketball news: Oscar Robertson joins lawsuit against NCAA

The Big O is tired of seeing his likeness used without his permission. This week, he officially joined a lawsuit against the NCAA, along with former stars like Ed O’Bannon, for using his likeness without his permission. Apparently, the University of Cincinnati profits every time his likenesss from his playing days with them is used. For example, an image from his freshman year appears on trading cards along with a piece of his jersey that comes with the cards. The Big O has had enough.
