Today’s Sports News – NFL news: Bears fans turn on Jay Cutler? Carson Palmer demands trade: Colts to make Manning top-paid player

Did Jay Cutler Quit On The Bears?

The Chicago Bears’ loss at home to Green Bay in the NFC Championship yesterday naturally left fans heartbroken. But Jay Cutler’s storyline also left them feeling suspicious. With the Packers up 14-0, Cutler left the game with a “knee injury.” However, he spent the rest of the game standing on the sidelines, not sitting. He didn’t limp at all during or after the game. The strange behaviour has fans questioning whether he was really hurt. Reportedly, some Bear fans burned Cutler jerseys after the loss.

For the record, Cutler’s teammates have publicly stepped up to defend him, insisting that he’s among the toughest guys on the team and that he really was hurt.

If the Bears decide to can Cutler, maybe they can swap him for Carson Palmer? The former first overall pick is set to demand a trade from the Cincinnati Bengals. Reportedly, he’s willing to “play the retirement card” if his needs aren’t met. Prior to that newsbreak, coach Marvin Lewis had said “No question in my mind that Carson Palmer is our quarterback,” so it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

The Indianapolis Colts have begun negotiating with Peyton Manning on a deal that would make him the highest-paid player in NFL history. The deal is reportedly richer than Tom Brady’s four-year, $72-million pact with New England.

MLB news: Angels acquire Vernon Wells; Manny, Damon reunite in Tampa; Royals extend Billy Butler

The Toronto Blue Jays swung a blockbuster deal no one thought possible on Friday; they somehow unloaded Vernon Wells’ mammoth contract. Toronto shipped Wells, who has $86 million over four years remaining on his deal, to the Los Angeles Angels for catcher Mike Napoli and outfielder Juan Rivera. The Jays will eat a small chunk of Wells’ deal – maybe $5 million.

The Tampa Bay Rays are determined to surpass the Yankees and hold off the retooled Red Sox next year and hope they helped their cause over the weekend by locking up both Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon. Both veteran sluggers signed one-year deals.

The Kansas City Royals have signed Billy Butler, their top hitter, to a four-year, $30-million extension. Butler hit .318 with 15 homers last season. He’s just 24 years old.

NHL news: Mike Komisarek accused of assault; Peter Forsberg skates with Avs; Nabokov won’t report to Isles

TMZ broke a pretty big scandal involving the Toronto Maple Leafs late last week. A woman has come forward claiming defenseman Mike Komisarek assaulted her at a Los Angeles nightclub after they beat the Los Angeles Kings on January 10. Allegedly, he lifted her up; the woman asked that he put her down but he didn’t. She slapped in the face and he responded by punching her in the face, making her bleed. So far, the Leafs have remained mum on the issue.

Is Peter Forsberg attempting yet another comeback? Foppa is skating with the Avalanche. At age 37 and with a wonky foot, there’s no telling if he’ll make it back, but he’s making a serious attempt. The Avs could possibly use him after losing Tomas Fleischman for the season last week.

Evgeni Nabokov’s return to the NHL has blown up in his face. For some bizarre reason, the New York Islanders stepped on the Red Wings’ toes and put a claim in for him. Um, Islanders? You do realize you’re guaranteeing yourself a lower first-round pick if you sign Nabby? It’s a moot point because Nabokov has refused to report to Long Island. He reportedly hung up on Isles general manager Garth Snow.

NBA news: Otis smith calls out Celtics

Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith seems to have an inferiority complex. Maybe he’s fed up with seeing the Celtics and Lakers in the NBA Finals, not to mention the Big Three in Miami? Smith called out the Celtics after they beat the Magic last week, saying that they “act tough but they’re not really tough.” Whatever you say, Otis.
