Today’s Sports News – MLB news: Andruw Jones signs with Yankees; Ramirez to Texas, Damon to Tampa?

Yankees Sign Andruw Jones

The New York Yankees have signed former 51-homer man Andruw Jones to a one-year deal worth $2 million with another $1.2 million in incentives. Jones, who had a .930 OPS against lefties last season, will play a platoon/DH role.

Have the Rangers and Rays locked up their respective new designated hitters? Texas is reportedly taking a long look at Manny Ramirez and Tampa Bay is close to signing Johnny Damon.

NBA news: Tyrus Thomas out eight weeks with knee injury; PeJa Stojakovic to Dallas

Charlotte Bobcats forward Tyrus Thomas will miss almost the entire remainder of the 2010-11 season. An MRI yesterday revealed a tear of his lateral meniscus. The injury will keep him out up to eight weeks.

Peja Stojakovic’s stay with the Toronto Raptors was a short one. He got his release from the team this week and is expected to sign with the Dallas Mavericks once he clears waivers. Still – there’s no guarantee that his wonky knees will hold up enough for him to really help the Mavs.

NFL news: Chad Ochocinco wants to be a Patriot; Albert Haynesworth wants to be an Eagle

Earlier this week, Chad Ochocinco said he’d like to play for the New England Patriots. Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis was unimpressed. “No one was talking about him; he couldn’t stand that,” Lewis said. “”You want them to talk about you, win football games.” Uh, same goes for you, Marvin.

Albert Haynesworth isn’t hiding his desire for a new team, either. He said this week that he would take less money to join the Philadelphia Eagles and play for Jim Washburn, his old defensive line coach.

NHL news: Tomas Fleischmann out for season

The Colorado Avalanche made a shrewd move in picking underappreciated forward Tomas Fleischmann up from the offensively stacked Washington Capitals earlier this season. Fleischmann flourished with his new team, tallying 21 points in 22 games. However, the Avs were dealt a crushing blow yesterday when it was announced that Fleischmann was done for the year.

During an examination for “shortness of breath,” doctors found a blood clots in both his lungs. Fleischmann requires blood thinners and cannot play hockey again this year.

Golf news: Tiger to open season at Torrey Pines; fan e-mail disqualifies Padraig Harrington at Abu Dhabi

Tiger Woods opens his 2011 PGA season next week – at one of his favorite tracks. The Farmer’s Insurance Open takes place at Torrey Pines. Tiger has won his last five starts at Torrey Pines – including the 2008 U.S. Open when he beat Rocco Mediate in a playoff despite a broken leg.

Earlier this year, a fan phoned in an infraction to disqualify Camilo Villegas from a PGA event. Now, a fan e-mail has gotten Padraig Harrington booted from the European Tour’s HSBC Championship in Abu Dhabi. He accidentally moved a ball while marking it and didn’t replace it. It was a two-stroke penalty, meaning his scorecard was signed incorrectly, meaning an automatic disqualification. Harrington was one shot behind leader Charl Schwartzel.
