Today’s Sports News – NFL news: Brett Favre files retirement papers; Raiders promote Hugh Jackson to head coach; Laurence Maroney arrested

Brett Favre files retirement papers

In a shocking twist, Brett Favre has filed his retirement papers. Again. Let’s hope it’s for good this time. Filing the papers “starts the clock” on pension and Hall of Fame eligibility.

The Oakland Raiders have found their head coaching successor to Tom Cable from within. They’ve officially promoted offensive co-ordinator Hugh Jackson to head coach. He totally revitalized their offense in 2010, especially in the running game; the Raiders scored more than twice as many points as they did in 2009.

Laurence Maroney was arrested late Monday night and is being held on unlawful weapons charges and gun charges. It’s possible that he could escape the situation unscathed since he had three other people in a car with him during the arrest. Few other details on the incident are available right now.

The Seattle Seahawks have reportedly fired offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates this morning. He came up to Seattle with Pete Carroll from USC, and before that was calling plays for Jay Cutler in Denver.

When asked for a comment Bates called a third and 1 fade play for 35 yards….of course the pass fell incomplete.

MLB news: Nats acquire Gorzelanny; Chris Young to Mets; Jon Rauch to Blue Jays

A few more minor acquisitions went down in Major League Baseball yesterday. The Washington Nationals landed starting pitcher Tom Gorzelanny from the Chicago Cubs for outfielder Michael Burgess, right-handed pitcher A.J. Morris and lefty Graham Hicks. Gorzelanny was 7-9 with a 4.09 ERA last season.

Big Chris Young is a New York Met. They signed the towering hurler to a one-year deal yesterday. The San Diego Padres declined his $8.5-million option after he struggled with several major injuries over the last few years.

The Toronto Blue Jays shored up their bullpen yesterday with a one-year, $3.75-million deal for Jon Rauch. He saved 21 games in 25 tries with Minnesota last year and has a good shot to close for the Jays in 2011.

NBA news: Brandon Roy has surgery on both knees; Blake Griffin scores league season-high 47 points

Portland Trail Blazers fans can put to rest any hope they had of seeing Brandon Roy back on the court anytime soon. He had arthroscopic surgery on both his knees yesterday. He says the soreness in his knees that has sidelined him for 18 games is caused by a lack of cartilage.

Time for a shoutout to the league’s most exciting player this season: Blake Griffin. The second coming of Shawn Kemp had a game for the ages yesterday, scoring a 2010-11 league high 47 points against the Indiana Pacers. He now has 27 consecutive double doubles.

NHL news: Bryan McCabe out with facial fractures; Sidney Crosby boycotting All-Star game?

Even if you don’t like his game, you can’t say Bryan McCabe isn’t tough. The Florida Panthers’ blueliner blocked a shot with his face on Saturday and sustained multiple fractures, including a broken jaw. He finished the game but had surgery Sunday and will miss four to six weeks.

Will Sidney Crosby boycott the All-Star game? It’s not because he was passed over for captain’s duty (Eric Staal was chosen); that only happened because Crosby is injured. However, it’s the nature of that injury that may cause Sid the Kid to walk out on the festivities.

Rumor has it Crosby, who was concussed by a cheap shot on New Year’s Day, is fed up with the league’s approach to player safety and head shots. He may skip the All-Star game as a form of protest.
