NBA news: Four players ejected as Clippers beat Lakers

Ejections in the Clippers vs. Lakers Game

The Blake Griffin hype train was already raging out of control. Then the Clippers beat the Heat. Then, yesterday, they beat the Lakers in a wild game that saw four players ejected.

After Griffin crashed into Lamar Odom’s back while trying to grab a rebound on a Randy Foye free-throw with just over five seconds to go, Odom grabbed Griffin by the jersey. Baron Davis then jumped in and shoved Odom by the chest. Griffin, Odom and Davis were predictably ejected – but so was Ron Artest.

Huh? No one seems to know what Artest’s role was in the fracas. I guess the refs just assumed Mr. Malice at the Palace had to be involved and ejected him without even thinking?

NFL news: Belichick benches Wes Welker for start of Divisional Playoff game

Did the New England Patriots lose at home to the New York Jets yesterday partially because they had the wrong mental approach?

First there was Wes Welker, who ranted leading up to the game while trying to use as many expressions involving “feet” as possible. He was taking shots at Rex Ryan and the foot-fetish scandal involving his wife. Then there was Bill Belichick’s decision to bench Welker for the start of Sunday’s game.

Belichick wanted to send a message to Welker: don’t go over my head and act out like that. But benching your receptions leader to start a playoff game? A little overconfident, no? Maybe next time Belichick will make Welker carry pads in practice.

MLB news: Reds extend Joey Votto; Athletics sign Grant Balfour, Brian Fuentes

The Cincinnati Reds have locked up the National League MVP for three years. First baseman Joey Votto has signed a three-year, $38-million deal. The 27-year-old exploded for a .324 average with 37 homers, 113 RBI, 16 stolen bases and a .424 on-base percentage last season.

The Oakland Athletics have added an elite setup man and a four-time All-Star closer to back up the injury-prone Andrew Bailey in their bullpen for 2011. On Friday, they signed Grand Balfour to a two-year, $8.1-million deal. He had a 2.28 ERA with 56 strikeouts over 55.1 innings with Tampa Bay last year. The A’s also added Brian Fuentes. He saved 24 games between the Angels and Twins last year and notched a career high with 48 saves in 2009.
