Today’s Sports News

NFL news: Cameron Newton declares for draft; Broncos name John Fox head coach; Shurmur to coach Browns?

Broncos name John Fox head coach

The 2011 NFL draft just got a whole lot more interesting. Especially with Andrew Luck out of the equation, where will Heisman Trophy winner Cameron Newton go? He has officially declared for the draft. After throwing for 30 touchdowns and running for 20 more en route to a national championship with Auburn, he had nothing left to accomplish at the college level. Believe it or not, some rumors suggest he’d consider converting to tight end instead of playing quarterback.

The Denver Broncos have their replacement for Josh McDaniels – but is it the right man? John Fox was successful more often than not as Carolina’s head coach but just finished a 2-14 season. He was 78-74 including the playoffs over nine seasons with the Panthers. John Elway made the signing for Denver, inking Fox to a four-year deal.

Do the Browns have their man? It appears so. They’ve hired Pat Shurmur as their new head coach. He spent the last two years as the St. Louis Rams’ offensive co-ordinator and played a big role in developing Sam Bradford’s game this year. The Browns hope he can do the same with Colt McCoy.

NBA news: Carmelo Anthony deal rumored between Nuggets, Knicks and Grizzlies

Another day, another Melo rumor. The latest suggests a three-team deal going down between Denver, New York and Memphis that would land Carmelo Anthony in New York. Unlike most of the rumors throughout this saga, this one is being kept close to the vest. We don’t know much about the specific names involved. Looks like the Knicks and Grizz learned from New Jersey’s mistake.

Is Gerald Wallace about to be banished to Cleveland? The Cavaliers have a $14.5-million trade exception to use up after the LeBron James deal and could eat the two years and $22 million left on Wallace’s contract. To do so, they may also want a lottery-protected first-round pick.

MLB news: Yankees sign Rafael Soriano; Royals sign Jeff Francis

At first glance, $35 million over three years is a ludicrous deal for a setup man. But the Yankees know what they’re doing with Rafael Soriano. For one, they can afford to pay him that much. Secondly, they’ll likely groom him to succeed Mariano Rivera once Mo retires. Soriano saved 45 games in 48 tries with the Tampa Bay Rays last season, posting a 1.73 ERA and unbelievable 0.80 WHIP.

The Kansas City Royals, eager for starting pitching after dealing away Zack Greinke, have signed Jeff Francis to a one-year deal. The lefty had a career year in 2007, going 17-9, but has battled injuries and inconsistency since.

NHL news: Maple Leafs acquire Fabian Brunnstrom

When you’re as desperate as the Toronto Maple Leafs, you may as well take a flier on a former top prospect turned bust. Fabian Brunnstrom was supposed to be a star in Dallas; he even scored a hat trick in his first NHL game and had 17 goals in his rookie season. But he’s bounced around mostly in the AHL since then.

The Leafs acquired him yesterday for winger Mikhail Stefanovich, a third-round pick currently playing in the KHL.
