Friday Water Cooler – April 23rd, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

The NFL Draft (Read my 2010 First Round NFL Draft Review) stole all the headlines yesterday, but what about the rest of the sports world?

Let’s catch up with all the non-football-related news.

MLB news: Pirates suffer worse loss ever

Just how bad do the sad-sack Pittsburgh Pirates, who once lost to Manatee College, have to be to suffer their worse lost ever? Try 20-0 bad. The Bucs were humiliated 20-0 by the Milwaukee Brewers in the most lopsided loss in franchise history. I’d say there’s nowhere to go but up but that may not be true with these guys.

NBA news: Hawks owner claims “Josh Smith is the closest thing to LeBron James”

Hmm. Nothing against Josh Smith but Atlanta Hawks owner Michael Gearon Jr. may be a bit off his rocker. Yesterday, he claimed that Josh Smith is “the closest thing to LeBron in the league. I’m not saying he’s LeBron. But just look, he gets assists, he rebounds, he blocks shots.” Well, that’s what I call a bit of a stretch. I guess Andrea Bargnani is Larry Bird because he, uh, is a tall guy who hits jump shots?

The latest award winner: Houston Rockets guard Aaron Brooks. The little point guard that could, who stands six feet tall, broke out this season, really carrying the Rockets on his shoulders with Yao Ming injured and Tracy McGrady shipped out of town. Brooks’ scoring average jumped 8.4 points – all the way to 19.6 points per game.

NHL news: Devils sent packing; Hasek a champ; Steroid scandal sneaking up on Caps?

Well, Ilya Kovalchuk is no Mark Messier. His word isn’t his bond; he guaranteed a New Jersey victory in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarter-final but could only watch as the Flyers steamrolled his New Jersey Devils to take a surprisingly lopsided series in five games.

Future Hall-of-Famer Marty Brodeur said goodbye to a forgettable season but another HOF goalie in the making, Dominik Hasek, had better luck overseas this year. The 45-year-old led his Czech League to a championship on Thursday night (for what that’s worth).

Once the dust settles from the 2010 playoffs this June, don’t be surprised if we hear a lot about the Washington Capitals this summer, Cup or no Cup. Virginia-based chiropractor Douglas Nagel has ties to steroid distribution and also treated a number of Washington Capitals players in the past. Here’s hoping this isn’t the start of any shocking series of revelations. Keep your innocence, hockey! We’ll accept fist fighting, but no PEDs, OK?

PGA news: Tiger Woods enters two tournaments

It feels good to say it: Tiger Woods has entered two more tournaments. He’ll play the Players Championship, widely considered the Tour’s “fifth major,” and the AT&T National, which benefits his own charity.

The Players starts May 6 and the AT&T National kicks off during the Fourth of July Weekend.
