Friday Water Cooler – May 21st, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

We’ve got a little bit of everything to send you off on your weekend today: bickering between Hall of Famers and current players, doping accusations and more.

Cycling news: Landis ordered to provide proof that Lance Armstrong doped

Considering that Floyd Landis had, er, honesty issues in the past, it’s no surprised that the IOC and World Anti-Doping Agency demanded today that Landis provide concrete evidence that Lance Armstrong doped.

Lance Armstrong & Floyd Landis At It Again...

Former UCI president Hein Verbruggen denied Landis’ claim that he helped cover up a positive drug test from Armstrong in 2002; Verbuggen said Armstrong has never tested positive.

NFL news: Favre will return if Southern Miss reaches  College World Series; Gale Sayers and Brian Urlacher feuding?

Nothing can really shock us in a Brett Favre offseason anymore.

So, sure, it makes perfect sense that he says he’ll return for one more NFL season if Southern Miss’ baseball team reaches the College World Series. Good luck, Golden Eagles.

At 30-20, you better string together some wins in a hurry to reach the big dance.

You know the Bears are in a trying time when their legends are calling out their current players. Gale Sayers fired a shot at the Bears this week, criticizing Jay Cutler and Lovie Smith and, most of all, Brian Urlacher:

“I don’t know how good he’s going to be coming back. He’s 33 years old.”

Urlacher retaliated: “Let me ask you a question. How many championships did Gale Sayers win? How many playoff games did he win when he played? None. None. None.”

Easy, children. Do you need to take a timeout or what?

Happy trails, Zach Thomas. The All-Pro linebacker signed a $1 ceremonial contract with the Miami Dolphins yesterday so he could retire with his original team after 12 seasons.

MLB news: Journeyman Brooks Conrad plays hero for Atlanta with walkoff grand slam

We couldn’t have scripted it better. The Atlanta Braves trailed 9-3 entering the bottom of the ninth inning against the Reds yesterday. After they pulled to within three, 30-year-old Brooks Conrad got the nod to pinch hit with the bases loaded.

He launched a walkoff grand slam off the glove of Laynce Nix to give Atlanta the 10-9 victory.

Dramatic stuff.

NBA news: Referee suspended for throwing ball at fan; Mark Cuban courting LeBron?

He’s no Tim Donaghy, but Joe DeRosa (sounds like Crazy Joe Davola from Seinfeld, doesn’t he?) made his own notorious headlines this week when he threw a ball at a fan at halftime during an Orlando Magic playoff game.

The fan, who happened to be the CEO of Wyndham, yelled at him from behind the scorer’s table and he took exception, tossing a ball at him.

The throw was relatively gentle but a throw is a throw, so DeRosa has been suspended without pay as a result of the incident.

Throw another team — and a deep-pocketed owner — into the race for LeBron James.

Hotshot billionaire and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban openly expressed interest in LeBron yesterday. He said “anybody” would be interested in himand that the Mavs would explore a sign-and-trade. Is this even news? Is anyone not interested in LeBron?
