Thursday Water Cooler – May 20th, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

Feeling dopey this morning? Nothing like a dose of doping news to wake you up.

NFL news: Santana Moss implicated in Anthony Galea doping case

It doesn’t necessarily mean anything yet, but Santana Moss’ name popped up in Dr. Anthony Galea’s drug-smuggling case yesterday. Moss won’t face any criminal charges at this time but he’s being treated as a witness. Galea treated Moss for an injury last September; it remains to be seen whether Moss received any PEDs, however.

Santana Moss - Drug User?

Cycling news: Landis admits doping and accuses Lance Armstrong of the same

Uh-oh. It’s always scary for the other dopers when they think their fellow users are solid in the cover story but one of them cracks. It happened with Jose Canseco in Major League Baseball and all the dominos fell after that.

Is the same about to happen in cycling? Sure, Floyd Landis was already stripped of his 2006 Tour De France title for doping, but today’s revelation is different because Landis admitted to doping for the first time. He had always denied it before.

Landis says he started doping in 2002 when he first joined the U.S. Postal service team, which was led by Lance Armstrong. He claims he doping – in the form of blood extractions – happened at Armstrong’s apartment. Landis says the blood was kept in a refrigerator in Armstrong’s closet and that he was asked to monitor the blood’s temperature daily.

MLB news: Angel Pagan has a night for the ages

It’s a shame the Mets lost 5-3 last night, as Angel Pagan was one special fella. He hit an inside-the-park home run and started a triple play in the same game, becoming the first major league to do so since 1955.

Pagan had one other inside-the-parker in his career. Strangely enough, a triple play occurred in that game two. (turned by the Phillies).

NHL news: Markov out six months after ACL surgery; Lance Armstrong mad at hockey (and Versus)

The Montreal Canadiens were already getting used to life without their top offensive defenseman, Andre Markov, in the 2010 playoffs. Now, they probably won’t have him in time for the start of next season. The Russian blueliner underwent surgery for his torn ACL and is expected to miss six months.

Strangely enough, we have more Lance Armstrong news to report. He’s mad at hockey and, more specifically, mad at the Versus network. Versus cut away from the Amgen Tour of California cycling event just minutes before its close finish to start pre-game coverage of the Canadiens/Flyers Game 2 matchup.

Armstrong’s angry Tweet on Tuesday night read:

“Who’s the dumbass @versustv that cut off @AmgenTourofCali coverage w/ a mile to go for pregame hockey?? #pathetic.”

I actually don’t remember what the sports world was like before Twitter. God bless it.

Golf news: Chi Chi Rodriguez robbed at home in Puerto Rico

Chi Chi Rodriguez did his best Mardy Gilyard impression yesterday. Think about it.

Early Wednesday morning, the golf legend and his wife were tied up and robbed at gunpoint by three assailants. They stole $500,000 in cash and jewelry plus the wedding ring off Mrs. Rodriguez’s finger. Luckily, the Rodriguezes were unharmed.

Wait a second – Chi Chi is worth $500,000 still? Atta boy! Too soon?
