Thursday Water Cooler – April 15th, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

An NFLer playing pro golf? A rap star suing a baseball player? Crossing over is the theme of today’s news.

MLB news: Jay-Z sues Big Papi

David “Big Papi” Ortiz’s horrific start to the 2010 MLB season just got a whole lot worse. Rapper Jay-Z – the superstar, business tycoon and extremely lucky man who married Beyoncé – is suing Big Papi. Ortiz opened a nightclub in the Dominican Republic and named it “Forty-Forty,” which bears a striking resemblance to Jay-Z’s line of “40/40 Club” sports lounges.

As Tom Fornelli suggested on Fanhouse, it’s not like Ortiz chose the name because he joined baseball’s 40/40 club. Actually, it looks right now like he’ll be lucky to join the 10/1 club this season. Think it’s a coincidence that Jay-Z is a Yankees fan?

From the rumor mill: The New York Mets are supposedly taking a long look at former manager Bobby Valentine, who returned to the U.S. this season as a TV analyst after spending several long, very successful seasons in Japan. Nothing against Bobby, but I don’t think anything or anyone can save the Mets in 2010.

Golf news: Jerry Rice makes Nationwide Tour debut

Dancing With the Stars. Playing for the Seahawks. Is there anything Jerry Rice can’t do? The NFL Hall-of-Famer’s latest feat: joining the Nationwide golf tour. At the Fresh Express Classic on a sponsor’s exemption, Rice opened with an 83, posting one birdie, eight pars, five bogeys and four double bogeys. Knowing how competitive Rice is, I wouldn’t put it past him to come back stronger the next time he plays.

NBA news: Paxson, Del Negro get physical?

Maybe they were tired of staying out of the headlines for so long after they used to steal them in the 1990s by draining treys on championship teams. According to multiple sources, John Paxson, the Bulls executive vice-president, and coach Vinny Del Negro had a physical altercation late last month. The two were disputing Joakim Noah’s playing time when Paxson allegedly grabbed Del Negro by the tie, jabbed him a couple times in the chest and challenged him to a fight.

Apparently, Del Negro played it smart and didn’t retaliate. Hey – maybe all the fire from up above helped get the Bulls into the playoffs? So the clear lesson here is: if your team is struggling, fight your head coach.

NHL news: Fleury under pressure after ugly Game 1 performance

Yawn. Are pundits really getting on Marc-Andre Fleury’s case after one game against the Ottawa Senators? After allowing some softies, hockey brass are wondering if his big-game reputation is in jeopardy. Come on. This is nothing new from Fleury. We all know he’s a great big-game goalie but that he’s also quite an inconsistent goalie. He had stinkers like Wednesday’s effort on occasion both last year and the year before – and he still reached the Stanley Cup Final two straight seasons and won it all last season. Fleury will be just fine.
