With the regular season just a few weeks away, we’ve got rumors galore in Major League Baseball highlighting the day’s news.

MLB news: Mauer, Wood on the move?

The Minnesota Twins are hoping 2010 can be a banner year. After all, they have the reigning American League MVP in Joe Mauer, a brand-new ballpark and a fresh division title under their belts. But it’s still possible that the bubble could burst sooner rather than later. Contract talks with Mauer are stalling and there are whispers that Mauer is slow to sign an extension even though the Twins are willing to break the bank to keep him – something the Twins have never been known to do.

If Mauer won’t sign, could the Twins consider moving him soon? The return may never be better than what it could be at this very moment. And you just know the Yankees would be in the mix. They could move, say, Phil Hughes and bigtime catching prospect Jesus Montero to get him.

Another name linked to Minnesota is Kerry Wood’s. The expensive Indians closer likely won’t have many save opportunities on a weak Cleveland team this season and the Twins need a replacement for injured Joe Nathan, so bringing in Wood makes sense.

NFL news: Seahawks eye Kevin Kolb; Browns eye Jake Delhomme

Quarterback shopping continues for the NFL’s weaker teams. Instead of using the draft, the Seattle Seahawks are wondering if they could skip the development period and snag a quarterback who is ready to start. Kevin Kolb is in a similar situation to that of Aaron Rodgers two years ago – a high draft pick who has sat on the bench behind a veteran for a few seasons and impressed in limited spot duty. It’s too early to tell if the Eagles are listening.

Apparently fed up with spoiling picks on busts like Tim Couch and Brady Quinn, the Browns also want avoid using the draft for a quarterback if the rumors are true. Apparently, they’re pursuing Jake Delhomme. I can’t imagine they have much competition – unless the UFL is interested.

NCAA basketball news: upsets continue as Syracuse loses more than just a game

Can we even call them “upsets” when they’re happening this frequently in the conference tournaments?  Yesterday, we saw Notre Dame down No. 16 Pittsburgh, Marquette edge No. 10 Villanova and, in the biggest shocker yet, No. 3 Syracuse fell – pun intended – to Georgetown.

Forward Arinze Onuaku took a bad spill and injured his knee while going for a rebound last night. X-Rays were negative but the MRI will tell the true story about any possible tendon or ligament damage. The mood seemed grim after the game and Orange fans can only pray Onuaku is OK – as losing him would knock Syracuse down into the second tier of contenders for March Madness.

PGA news: Tiger likely to return at Augusta

Hey – it’s not a huge news break, as this was the rumor all along. But we owe it to you to report anything Tiger Woods-related. So the latest is that Tiger “most likely” will return next month for the Masters at Augusta National.

From Tiger’s perspective, it’s the smartest possible move. Few if any tournaments do a better job muzzling rowdy fans or hungry media than the Masters does. He’ll have better control of his situation there than at any other tournament. The biggest winner if the rumor is true: CBS.
