A's Pitcher Dallas Braden Throws A Perfect Game

You want fireworks? You got ’em. The weekend produced a bushel of big news stories. Let’s get to it.

MLB news: Braden throws perfect game

The newest member of baseball’s perfect game club? Yes, the same Dallas Braden whose 15 minutes were up according to Alex Rodriguez. He threw a perfect game Sunday afternoon – and against the powerhouse Tampa Bay Rays of all teams. He struck out six in the magical performance, needing 109 pitches to close out the game.

East Nicolaus high school pitcher John Kukuruda did his best to one-up Braden over the weekend. On Friday, he threw his fourth straight no-hitter, breaking a California state record.

PGA news: Tiger Woods withdraws from Players Championship due to injury

Even if Tiger is putting his scandal(s) behind him, he’s still not out of the woods. Eight holes into his final round at the Players, he withdrew from the tournament with nagging pain in his neck and back. He was visibly frustrated when speaking to reporters and said he feared that the problem is a bulging disk.

Sounds like any real redemption on the golf course may not come until 2011 for Tiger.

Congrats to South Africa’s Tim Clark for winning the 2010 Players Champioship and his first PGA tour victory.

NFL news: Brian Cushing suspended for steroids; Taylor admits to paying for sex

The luster has quickly worn off Houston linebacker Brian Cushing’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award. On Friday, he was suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s steroid policy. He passionately denied any steroid use, claiming he tested positive for a drug that wasn’t a steroid.

Not helping his case: Cushing had rumors of PED use swirling around him before he entered the 2009 draft.

Lawrence Taylor update: the Hall-of-Famer continues to deny the rape charges against him but did admit to paying $300 for sex at a suburban Holiday Inn.

UFC news: Daley banned after sucker punch in UFC 113; Kimbo gets walking papers too

It was an eventful Saturday at UFC 113 in Montreal – and not just because Mauricio “Shogun” Rua knocked Lyoto Machida into next Tuesday to win the light heavyweight title.

The real controversy came in the welterweight No. 1 contender match between Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley. As he predicted, the mouthy Koscheck beat the equally mouthy Daley by using his strong wrestling. But the fight didn’t end after the final bell. Daley tapped Koscheck on the shoulder and hit him above the eye with a sucker punch. Allegedly, Koscheck whispered something during the fight that offended Daley.

But that didn’t matter to commissioner Dana White. He slapped Daley with a lifetime ban from the UFC immediately after the fight.

Koscheck, a Pennsylvania native, stirred the pot even more after the bout when he called out he capacity Montreal crowd, telling them the Penguins would “kick the Canadiens’ ass” in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Another fighter was cut after UFC 113: Kimbo Slice. The hype train came to a screeching halt when Matt Mitrione beat the tar out of him and scored a second-round TKO.
