MLB news: White Sox re-sign Paul Konerko; Cubs sign Carlos Pena; Yanks prepared to break the bank on Cliff Lee

Cubs sign Carlos Pena

Another day, another slew of signings at the MLB winter meetings. Turns out Adam Dunn wasn’t a replacement for Paul Konerko on the White Sox after all; he was a complement. Chicago re-signed Konerko for three years and $37.5 million. He and Dunn will form a potent one-two punch in the middle of the Pale Hose’s lineup in 2011.

On the north side of the windy city, the Cubs locked up a slugger of their own yesterday. They signed Carlos Pena to a one-year, $10-million deal. Pena hit only .196 last year but clubbed 28 homers and has gone yard at least that many times in four straight seasons.

Just in case there was any doubt – yes, the Yankees are planning to make a monstrous offer to Cliff Lee. Reportedly, they’re willing to give him $140-million or more over six-years, putting him in C.C. Sabathia territory. Stay tuned.

NFL news: 49ers reinstall Alex Smith as starting quarterback

The Troy Smith era ended quickly in San Francisco. The former Heisman Trophy winner went 3-2 as a starter after taking over for injured Alex Smith. But, apparently, leading San Francisco to three of its four victories wasn’t enough for him to keep the job.

Alex Smith will get his job back this week when the 49ers battle Seattle. The belief among the Niners’ coaches is that his more extensive playbook knowledge gives them a better chance to win. We’ll see about that.

NHL news: Patrick Kane out three weeks

The defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks could be without their top offensive player for the next few weeks. Patrick Kane, who scored the Cup-winning goal in overtime last spring, is out up to three weeks with a leg injury. He hurt himself when he fell awkwardly into the boards after a hit from Cory Sarich during Sunday’s win over Calgary.

NCAA football news: Dave Wannstedt resigns from Pittsburgh; UConn player arrested for child porn

Dave Wannstedt “resigned” as Pittsburgh’s head coach yesterday – but not the quotations around the word. Officially, that’s the story, but it appears he was coerced into leaving the team.

Wannstedt signed a contract extension through 2014 less than a year ago. He was very emotional at the press conference and had multiple Panthers players show up voluntarily to crowd around him and display their support. Athletic director Steve Pederson claimed that he and Wannstedt had discussed numerous times that Wannstedt “wouldn’t coach forever and that he might want to do something else.”

Connecticut got some ugly news this week when one of its offensive linemen, Greg McKee, turned himself in to police for child pornography. McKee hadn’t yet played for the Huskies; he was sitting out a year to keep his four years of eligibility. He’s being held on $75,000 bond on charges of obscenity, importing child pornography and promoting a minor in an obscene performance.
