NFL news: Broncos fire Josh McDaniels; Redskins suspend Albert Haynesworth

Bye Bye Josh McDaniels

The little man’s reign of terror in Denver is no more. In a move that surprised some given that it came with just a few weeks left in an already-lost season, the Broncos fired head coach Josh McDaniels yesterday.

McDaniels looked like a golden boy when he started with Denver last year, leading the Broncos to a 6-0 start, but it was all downhill after that. Denver lost eight of its last 10 games. Overall, McDaniels departs having gone 5-17 over his final 22 games with the team. He’ll also be remembered as the guy who ran Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall out of town and traded up to grab Tim Tebow. Not exactly a great legacy.

The Washington Redskins have had enough with disgruntled defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. Rumor has it he showed up to Friday’s practice hung over and missed a team meeting. That was the final straw; Washington suspended him for the final four games of 2010 without pay for conduct detrimental to the team.

MLB news: Jim Tracy collapses; Orioles acquire Mark Reynolds; Wigginton, Putz find new teams

With the winter meetings under way, it’s an eventful week in Major League Baseball. Unfortunately, not all the headlines are positive. While attending the meetings in Orlando, Colorado Rockies manager Jim Tracy collapsed while standing near an elevator at the Dolphin Hotel. He was taken to hospital on a stretcher by paramedics. Tracy, 54, hadn’t shown any other signs of poor health that day. He’ll undergo test at a local hospital and await word from doctors.

The Baltimore Orioles made Monday’s biggest move, acquiring third baseman Mark Reynolds from the Arizona Diamondbacks for relievers David Hernandez and Kam Mickolio. Reynolds brings major power to the table for Baltimore, having smashed 28, 44 and 32 homers over his last three years. However, he struck out 204, 223 and 211 times over those seasons; those are the three highest single-season strikeout totals in major-league history.

With Reynolds on board, the Orioles could let Ty Wigginton walk. He signed a two-year, $8-million deal with Colorado. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks continued bolstering their bullpen and signed J.J. Putz for $10 million over two years.

In non-meetings-related news, Pat Gillick has been elected to the baseball Hall of Fame. He built the 1992 and 1993 World Series champion Blue Jay teams and the 2008 World Series champion Phillies team.

Finally, a newsbreak in the Los Angeles’ Dodgers’ ownership scandal. A judge has ruled that the marital deal making Frank McCourt the sole team owner is invalid. His wife, Jamie, has been ruled co-owner of the team.

NBA news: David Stern confirms NBA’s takeover of the New Orleans Hornets

It’s official: the NBA is buying the New Orleans Hornets. Commissioner David Stern has confirmed that the league will purchase the club from majority owner George Shinn and minority partner Gary Chouest. Stern said the move is intended to keep the team in New Orleans. If the NBA didn’t step in, cash-strapped Shinn could take the next remotely good offer he got and possibly turn the team over to someone who wanted to move it.
