NFL news: 49ers fire Mike Singletary; Vikings/Eagles game postponed; Arrelious Benn out for season

49ers fire Mike Singletary

It was only a matter of time and, as soon as the Rams eliminated the San Francisco 49ers from playoff contention Sunday, the 49ers axed their head coach. San Francisco fired Mike Singletary on Sunday night. He led the team to a 5-10 record this season and went 18-22 overall during his tenure. The Niners named defensive line coach Jim Tomsula their head coach for next week’s season finale against Arizona.

The Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles were supposed to do battle yesterday but a major blizzard in the Philadelphia area led to the game being postponed. The two teams will meet on Tuesday night; Brett Favre (concussion) doesn’t look like he’ll be medically cleared in time to play.

If the Bucs can miraculously sneak into the postseason, they’ll have to do it without promising rookie wideout Arrelious Benn. He tore a ligament when he took a helmet to the knee in Tampa’s victory over Seattle. He’s out for the year.

Will Chad Ochocinco be the last man standing in Cincinnati? We’ve heard rumors of Terrell Owens, Marvin Lewis, Cedric Benson and Ochocinco all having new addresses in 2011, but Ochocinco isn’t so sure. He reportedly said this week that he wants to remain a Bengal beyond next season. But do the Bengals still want him?

NBA news: Rockets looking to trade Yao?

Here’s a juicy new trade rumor from Santa. Are the Houston Rockets looking to unload Yao Ming? The situation is rather complex. Yao is out for the season with a stress fracture in his left ankle and his contract is expiring. But the allure of acquiring him is twofold; some teams may try to re-sign him anyway and hope they can get him healthy next year while others will use his $17.7-million expiring deal as a cost-saving maneuver because of the $8 million in insurance that accompanies his contract.

NHL news: Jason Spezza, Derek Roy suffer major injuries

Two Northeast division rivals have to soldier on without their first-line centers. The Ottawa Senators lost Jason Spezza to a serious right shoulder injury after Kris Letang drilled him into the boards from behind last night. He may require surgery and is expected to miss at least six weeks.

The prognosis is even worse for Buffalo’s Derek Roy. Unlike Spezza, Roy was having a great year, posting 35 points in 35 games. He tore his quad on Thursday night against Florida and will miss four to six months.

MLB news: Padres sign Brad Hawpe; Rangers sign Brandon Webb

The Padres will have a tough time replacing Adrian Gonzalez’s power but they have to try. On Friday they signed power hitter Brad Hawpe to a one-year deal. Hawpe struggled in 2010, hitting only nine homers in 103 games between Colorado and Tampa, but had four straight seasons with at least 22 homers and 84 RBI before that.

He’s no Cliff Lee but the Rangers hope they have a bargain in former ace Brandon Webb. They signed the groundball machine to a one-year, $3 million deal. He hasn’t pitched since 2009 because of a shoulder injury.
