NBA news: Larry Brown out as Bobcats head coach;Carmelo Anthony’s sister dies

Carmelo Anthony’s sister dies

Larry Brown is no longer coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. Did he quit? Was he fired? It’s not clear. The way team owner Michael Jordan explained it, “The team has clearly not lived up to either of our expectations and we both agreed that a change was necessary.”

The Bobcats were 9-19 under Brown and 88-108 overall during his time there. On that note – Larry Brown was with Charlotte for 196 games? Who knew? Talk about toiling in obscurity. Jordan has named Paul Silas as Brown’s replacement. Silas hasn’t coached since 2005 but was successful with the New Orleans Hornets as they transitioned form Charlotte in 2002 and helped launch LeBron James in Cleveland after that.

Carmelo Anthony has taken a leave of absence from the Denver Nuggets, not because of trade rumors but, sadly, because his sister passed away. Michelle Anthony died of a pre-existing medical condition Tuesday in Baltimore, leaving behind four children.

NHL news: Devils fire John MacLean, bring back Jacques Lemaire; Pavel Datsyuk breaks hand; Leafs ban waffle thrower

I suppose John MacLean should stick to rescuing hostages from skyscrapers. He just wasn’t cut out to replace a legend like Jacques Lemaire in New Jersey. The woeful Devils’ solution to the problem: bring back Lemaire for a third stint as head coach. Taking over a 9-22-2 team, he’ll be hard-pressed for more success this time around.

The Detroit Red Wings have been dominant more often than not this season but will have a tougher time keeping up the good work for the next month or so. Their leading scorer, Pavel Datsyuk, broke his hand last night after Vancouver’s Mikael Samuelsson fell awkwardly on him. He’s expected to be out until around the All-Star break.

The man who threw waffles onto the ice at the Air Canada Centre to protest the Toronto Maple Leafs’ poor play has made a name for himself over the last two weeks but may be facing the music now. Joseph Robb has been barred from the ACC and charged with criminal mischief.

MLB news: Driver who killed Nick Adenhart gets 51 years to life

Andrew Gallo, the man who killed Angels prospect Nick Adenhart and two other people, has been sentenced in his drunk driving case. He was convicted in September of three counts of second-degree murder and single counts of drunk driving, hit-and-run driving, driving under influence of alcohol and causing great bodily injury; he was a repeat offender. Gallo was sentenced yesterday to 51 years to life in prison.

NCAA football news: Ohio State violated rules by bartering autographs?

  1. Sigh. Another all-important NCAA rule violation to discuss. Some Ohio State Buckeyes players reportedly traded autographs for tattoos, which is apparently a no-no. Athletic director Gene Smith will hold a news conference today to discuss the matter.
