NFL news: Metrodome roof collapses; Aaron Rodgers injured; Mark Sanchez almost benched?

Heavy snow in Minneapolis caused the roof of The Metrodome To Cave In

After weeks of close games, this past Sunday was Blowout Day in the NFL. Team after team got dominated – and so did the roof of the Metrodome in Minnesota. It caved in and onto the field, unable to withstand the weight of the snow from a massive blizzard. The Vikings game versus the Giants has been moved to tonight and will be played at Ford Field in Detroit. Could the extra day of rest be enough for Brett Favre to start?

The Green Bay Packers’ playoff hopes took a massive hit when their quarterback took a massive hit yesterday. Aaron Rodgers was concussed after getting hit on consecutive plays, one of which came when he broke an 18-yard run but didn’t slide. The Pack lost the game 7-3 to Detroit.

The tides are turning quickly for the New York Jets. Two weeks ago, they were 9-2 and on top of the world. Suddenly, they’re 9-4 and their starting quarterback was almost benched yesterday. Rex Ryan said that he “considered” benching an ineffective Sanchez during the Jets’ loss to Miami, in which he went 17 of 44 with a pick and a fumble, but decided he still gave New York the best chance to win.

NCAA football news: Cameron Newton wins Heisman Trophy; new coaches for Florida, Miami

Not surprisingly, Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton won the Heisman Trophy in a landslide on Saturday. He received 729 first-place votes and finished 1,184 points ahead of runner-up Andrew Luck.

Two major Florida-based schools are wasting no time finding new head coaches. With Urban Meyer leaving (due to health? Family time? The reason keeps changing), Florida snagged Texas defensive co-ordinator Will Muschamp. Over the last three years with the Longhorns, Muschamp defenses led the country in sacks, yards per carry allowed, rushing yards allowed per game and total yards allowed per game.

The Miami Hurricanes signed Al Golden away from Temple on a five-year deal that will pay him roughly $2 million annually. In three seasons before Golden arrived, Temple went 3-31; it went 1-11 in his first season.  After that, the Owls won 26 games over his final four years with them.

NBA news: Clippers owner heckles Baron Davis

I know it’s the Clippers but, still, I’ve never seen this before. Yahoo! Sports reported today that L.A.’s highest-paid player, Baron Davis, has been repeatedly heckled and taunted during games this year and last year. Again, that’s no news. It’s the Clippers. But the person leading the heckling is the Clippers’ owner, Donald Sterling.

Reportedly, Sterling regularly yells things like “Why are you in the game?’, “Why did you take that shot?” and “You’re out of shape!” He’s frustrated that Davis isn’t living up to this $13-million salary; he averages only 7.4 points per game this year.  Sterling reportedly taunts other Clipper players on occasion, too.

NHL news: Bruins trade Marco Sturm to Kings

Finally, the cash-strapped Boston Bruins are free of Marco Sturm. Nothing against Sturm, but the Bruins have been trying to unload him and clear cap space ever since Marc Savard returned from injury. He hasn’t played this season after undergoing MCL and ACL surgery over the summer, so he’ll have to pass a physical, but he’s reportedly only a week away from returning. The Bruins received a conditional draft pick in return or, as Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli described it, “nothing.”
