Injuries, injuries, injuries. More players went down in preseason NFL action last night and something sad happened in baseball. We’ll start Friday’s news on a low note.

NFL news: Avery, Addai, Brackett injured; Matt Leinart benched; Sam Bradford flourishes

Matt Leinart benched

Last night’s Patriots/Rams matchup had its ups and downs. The bad news: speedy Rams receiver Donnie Avery went down with what coach Steve Spagnuolo said is probably “a significant knee injury.” It looks like they may have lost Avery for the season.

New England’s Wes Welker, who battled back from torn ACL over the winter and spring, extended his hand to comfort Avery before he was carted off. So that’s the bad news. The good news from that game: Sam Bradford looked like a stud. The No. 1 overall pick went 15 of 22 for 189 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Rams to a 36-35 win. Spagnuolo didn’t say if the performance earned Bradford a starting job for Week 1 but it certainly boosted Bradford’s chances.

A couple of Indianapolis Colts got scares in last night’s loss to the Packers. Joseph Addai got concussed by a big hit in the third quarter. He said he “just got a little dizzy” and insists that he could’ve re-entered the game. Indy linebacker Gary Brackett also left the game with a hand injury but not much is known about its severity.

Maybe Matt Leinart won’t get his shot to replace Kurt Warner after all. After struggling through the preseason so far, he appears to have lost Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt’s confidence. Leinart has been benched in favor of Derek Anderson.

Anderson will start the Cards’ third preseason game – which is widely considered the most important one in which most of the regular-season starters get increased reps.

Plenty of former NFL quarterbacks – Steve Beuerlein, Boomer Esiason, and Rich Gannon, to name a few – have publicly stated that they don’t or never have seen Leinart as good enough to be a bona fide NFL starting quarterback.

MLB: Stephen Strasburg has torn elbow ligament; Pujols third youngest player to 400 homers

Sigh. It’s been a trying decade for the Washington Nationals, who were just starting to sense they turned the corner thanks to draft picks like Ryan Zimmerman, Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper. But the Nats – and the game of baseball – got some crushing news today.

Strasburg, the most hyped pitching prospect this millennium, has torn his ulnar collateral ligament. It’s entirely possible that he’ll need Tommy John surgery and miss the entire 2011 season. Expect a more formal announcement from Washington soon.

On a happier note, Albert Pujols became the third-youngest player to reach 400 homers; only Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. did it faster. Pujols also looks like he’ll post a 10th straight season with a .300 average, 30 homers and 100 RBI.

UFC news: Silva/Sonnen rematch will happen

Fans clamoring for Chael Sonnen to get another shot at the UFC middleweight title after he came so close to beating Anderson Silva earlier this month will get their wish.
Dana White announced that Sonnen will get Silva next – late this year or in early 2011.

Contender Vitor Belfort will have to wait for his shot.
