Sports News – NBA news: Chris Mullin, Arvydas Sabonis join Dennis Rodman in Hall of Fame

Dennis Rodman inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame

We already learned that Dennis Rodman was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this week; now we know who will join him in the 2011 class.

Chris Mullin, a former Dream Team member, also made the cut. The five-time All-Star averaged 18.2 points per game with the Warriors and Pacers during his career. Former Portland Trail Blazers center Arvydas Sabonis (remember him? Smooth for a big man) made the cut as well.

Other inductees included former All-Star Maurice Cheeks, a four time All-Star who was the NBA’s all-time steals leader when he retired. Joining him: Artis Gilmore, Tex Winter, Herb Magee, Teresa Edwards and Reece “Goose” Tatum of the Harlem Globetrotters.

MLB news: Bonds witness recovers secret recording of conversation with doctor: Guthrie has pneumonia

Just when the Barry Bonds defense appeared to strengthen last week thanks to Dr. Arthur Ting’s testimony, the prosecution struck back hard on Monday. Ting denied having any conversations with Bonds’ former friend and business partner, Steve Hoskins, regarding Bonds’ steroid use. But Hoskins refuted that testimony in a big way on Monday.

Prosecutors in the federal perjury case say Hoskins has rediscovered a tape of a secretly recorded conversation with Ting in which Ting discusses Bonds’ steroid use. There was no new testimony Monday because a juror was ill. The court must decide whether or not the new piece of evidence can be used in the case.

The Baltimore Orioles are off to a blazing start – largely because Jeremy Guthrie got them started on the right foot with eight shutout innings on Opening Day. But Guthrie’s luck took a downward turn Monday. He’s been hospitalized with pneumonia and should miss five to seven days. Brad Bergesen will take Guthrie’s next scheduled start on Wednesday.

NFL news: Mike Vrabel arrested for theft; Roger Goodell wants HGH testing in new labor deal

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Mike Vrabel was arrested Monday at a casino in Florence, Indiana on theft charges. The details of the crime weren’t released but Vrabel described the incident as “an unfortunate misunderstanding and I take full responsibility for the miscommunication.” He was released on $600 bail.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league will insist on human-growth-hormone testing in the next labor deal whenever it’s eventually struck with the players union. While the use of HGH is banned in the NFL, the recently expired deal didn’t include mandatory testing for it.

NHL news: Senators shut down Karlsson, Gonchar and Alfredsson for the season

The Ottawa Senators were eliminated long ago from playoff contention and they’ve decided to shut down some of their key contributors with a few games left on the schedule. Erik Karlsson needed 25 stitches to close a cut on his thigh Thursday; Gonchar has a concussion; Alfredsson has missed significant time with a back injury.

NCAA Basketball news: Southern athletic director caught in prostitution sting; Bob Knight interested in coaching UNLV?

One of the more surprising stories coming out of the Final Four this year: Southern University athletic director Greg LaFleur has been arrested for soliciting a prostitute. He was nabbed Sunday night by an undercover officer posing as a prostitute. LaFleur, a former NFL tight end, is the father of Gonzaga center Robert Sacre.

Could legendary coach Bob Knight be returning to the NCAA? He last coached in 2008 with Texas Tech but the former longtime Indiana Hoosiers coach is reportedly interested in the vacant head-coaching job at UNLV. Knight is third all-time in NCAA wins with 902 and has a .709 career winning percentage.
