Sports News – NFL news: Judge lifts lockout

NFL news: Judge lifts lockout

The NFL lockout is no more! U.S. District Court Judge Susan Richard Nelson ruled in favor of the players Monday in their motion for a preliminary injunction. The lockout imposed by the owners March 11 has been halted. Players are now free to use team facilities and sign contracts. Teams are also free to make trades.

The NFL has requested a stay on the ruling until it can argue its case before the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. Nelson won’t grant the stay and the Court of Appeals likely won’t provide a ruling for a least a week.

NCAA basketball news: Jim Larranaga leaves George Mason for Miami; Texas’ Thompson, Joseph declare for draft

Longtime George Mason head coach Jim Larranaga is leaving after 14 seasons. He’s taken a job as the new coach of the Miami Hurricanes. George Mason hoped to retain him but couldn’t match the offer Miami gave him. Larranaga takes over for Frank Haith, who bolted for Missouri.

Is any good player from the 2010-11 season not declaring for the NBA draft? The latest to join the fray are the Texas Longhorns’ two dynamic Canadians. Tristan Thompson has a chance to become the first Canadian first-round pick since Jamaal Magloire in 2000. Guard Cory Joseph will also declare.

NCAA football news: Major penalties for OSU, Tressel; Janoris Jenkins arrested again

The penalties continue to reign down on Ohio State and head coach Jim Tressel. An investigation by The Columbus Dispatch published Monday revealed that Tressel, upon learning that quarterback Terrelle Pryor was trading memorabilia for tattoos, contacted an FBI agent and Pryor’s mentor instead of the school.

Tressel had already been fined $250,000 and he and Pryor are also both suspended for five games. But the latest revelations could result in a forfeiture of the whole 2010 regular season, a 2011 postseason ban and the loss of scholarships.

Janoris Jenkins just won’t learn. The Florida cornerback was arrested on Saturday – his third booking in the last two years – for misdemeanor marijuana possession. A Gainesville, Florida police offer found Jenkins smoking a blunt in a car. He was charged for possession of less than 20 grams and released after signing a notice to appear in court on May 12.

PGA news: Tiger Woods to miss the Wells Fargo due to injury

Tiger Woods won’t tee up for the Wells Fargo Championship next week because of injury. During the third round of the Masters, he suffered a mild MCL sprain in his left knee and strained his left Achilles tendon while trying to strike a ball from beneath a tree. He hopes to return for the PLAYERS Championship the following week.

NHL news: Roberto Luongo gets the nod for Game 7

Despite his struggles and despite Vancouver blowing a 3-0 series lead, Roberto Luongo will start in goal for the Vancouver Canucks tonight for Game 7 against the Chicago Blackhawks. In Games 4 and 5, Chicago scored 10 goals on 40 shots; Luongo was pulled in both games. Coach Alain Vigneault started Corey Schneider in Game 6 before he was pulled due to injury.

MLB news: Carl Everett arrested; Andre Ethier’s streak continues

Crazy Carl Everett is out of Major League Baseball but, trust me, he’s still just as crazy. He was arrested Monday night for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a dispute with his wife. He reportedly pointed a gun at his wife’s head and broke two cell phones when she tried to call for help.

Andre Ethier’s hit streak continues. He extended it to 22 games last night with a single against the Florida Marlins. No player has hit safely in 30 straight games since Jimmy Rollins (between 2005 and 2006).
