The United States will start their World Cup campaign with what promises to be their toughest match of the group stage as they take on football superpower England. This will be the teams’ first World Cup matchup since the Americans’ 1-0 victory at the 1950 tournament in Brazil. The Three Lions enjoy a far superior record against the Stars and Stripes on the international stage.

They have played the USA 10 times winning eight of those matches and losing just twice. Capello will be aiming to bring that winning tally up to nine on June 12th.

Qualification for South Africa 2010 after such a short time with Capello in charge clearly demonstrates the impact that he is having on the England team. The 1-0 loss in Ukraine in 2009 sits fresh in everyone’s mind, but his side has shown they can beat the U.S. with a 2-0 win in an exhibition game at Wembley in May of 2008.

When the finals commence it will be South Africa’s winter, so the climate conditions are exactly what the England team is used to. The bulk of the squad is unchanged since 2004, and after the starting 11, the options are thin, with goalkeeping being a huge question mark. Despite these concerns the side qualified very convincingly by scoring the most goals in European qualifying.

Star power comes from Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, and midfield duo Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

Meanwhile, the USA sees its sixth consecutive appearance; their ticket to South Africa 2010 was clinched with the 3-2 win in one of CONCACAF’s toughest grounds – the Estadio Olimpico. The 2002 World Cup was a great moment for the U.S. and 2010 could take it to a new level. The side is lead by skipper Landon Donovan, a player that is no stranger to the world stage.

Keeper Tim Howard, Oguchi Onyewu, Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, and Edson Buddle who is likely to replace the injured Jozy Altidore, round out a strong squad. Originally, head coach Bill Bradley was hired to manage on a temporary basis, but was so successful he was made permanent manager.

After the Confederations Cup 2009, any doubt about his ability was laid to rest with a strong performance.

The United States has transformed itself into a side with huge potential, and in recent years has become a genuine contender in these sorts of competitions.

Their chances have been underestimated at this World Cup considering how well they performed at the Confederations Cup. However, previous encounters between these two sides show that England should still have the edge.

England vs. United States of America Round 1 Free Pick:

I expect a 1-0 win for England in a nail biter.

One reply on “World Cup Free Picks – U.S.A. vs. England Line”

Most of the side has or does play in the English Premiership and know their opposition like the back of their hands, this is a factor again I believe the bookies are under estimating when I saw the pricing of this game.

England are a classy side but given how organised America are and the lack of fear they have towards England, we could see another famous result for the US.

However come the end of the game I believe that it will be Capello’s side will just have too much as the English depart Rustenburg with a small marginal victory very likely.
